Brian Cox Admits He Was Wrong For Calling Johnny Depp Overrated
Brian Cox is a Scottish actor renowned for portraying patriarch Logan Roy in the series Succession. Apart from his great work on screen, the actor is also known for blatantly expressing his thoughts. And he once targeted Johnny Depp. The actor previously made headlines for criticizing Depp in his memoir, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. Cox called Depp ‘an overrated actor’ in his autobiography.
Questioning Johnny Depp’s acting skills is a question in itself. When it comes to on-screen performance, Depp has undoubtedly aced all his roles. Cox may have realized it too, as he later regretted his statement.
Why did Brian Cox condemn Johnny Depp’s acting skills?
Last year, Brian Cox released his autobiography, Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. In his book, the Manhunter actor claimed that he refused to work in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise because he was not satisfied with the role he was offered. The 76-year-old actor said,
“Another thing with Pirates of the Caribbean is that it’s very much the Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow’s show, and Depp, personable though I’m sure he is, is so overblown, so overrated.”
This isn’t the first time Cox has given such a statement; rather, he is known for making such blatant comments. And this time he chose to be opinionated about Jonny Depp’s performance skills. Cox didn’t approve of Depp’s performance in Edward Scissorhands, as he thought Depp had nothing much to do as the make-up in the movie was enough to do the work. The Red actor said,
“I mean, Edward Scissorhands. Let’s face it, if you come on with hands like that and pale, scarred-face make-up, you don’t have to do anything. And he didn’t. And subsequently, he’s done even less. But people love him. Or they did love him. They don’t love him so much these days, of course.”

After his statement, Cox made headlines for backlashing the Golden Globe Award winner. Later, on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, Cox admitted that he was wrong about The Tourist actor and apologized to him on television. Cox said,
“I just thought I was being a bit harsh. You know what it’s like; you go for the easy joke. And I went for the easy joke. That was what happened, and I sort of regretted it. Because I’m not like that normally; I was just being a bit glib, a bit flip.”
Johnny Depp is a renowned actor who needs no introduction. Depp has given arguably the best performance.
Why did Brian Cox turn down Pirates of the Caribbean?
Reportedly, Brian Cox was offered a role in the popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but he turned it down. Cox was offered the role of Governor Swann, which was later portrayed by Jonathan Pryce. Cox has previously worked with the director of Pirates of the Caribbean in the movie The Ring, and opting for the movie would have reunited them again. But unfortunately, Cox had a different perspective. The Braveheart actor said in his memoir,
“It would have been a money-spinner, but of all the parts in that film, it was the most thankless, plus I would have ended up doing it for film after film and missed out on all the other nice things I’ve done.”
He also emphasised that the movie focused on the character of Jack Sparrow, portrayed by Johnny Depp.
