Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon, has been a thrilling journey for both the director and fans alike. After the original films faced a chilly reception from critics, Snyder released director’s cuts this month that promised a fuller story. But the question is: have these extended versions saved the day?

And the answer is no! Critics haven’t been kind to the recent releases of Rebel Moon director’s cuts. While Chalice of Blood and Curse of Forgiveness received slightly better scores than the originals, they still remain in the ‘rotten’ category. However, Snyder is finding solace in his loyal fan base who continue to support him.

Zack Snyder‘s R-rated director’s cut of Rebel Moon takes place in “two entirely different timelines” compared to the PG-13 original. While Snyder saw this as an improvement, critics argue it hasn’t made the films any better.

However, the Justice League director is still hopeful and grateful. He is feeling supported by his fans even though critics gave his Rebel Moon director’s cut a poor 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The 58-year-old thanked Netflix for letting him share his original version of the film and encouraged his fans to keep supporting it. Check out some fan reactions:

Rebel Moon Part 1 now has a 29% rating from critics and 61% from audiences, up from 22% and 56%, respectively. Rebel Moon Part 2 has improved to 40% from critics and 68% from audiences, compared to the original’s 17% and 48%. This trend is similar to how Snyder’s Justice League did better than the original version.

Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cut is Longer, But Not Better

After all, Rebel Moon brought in some new titles but didn’t change much beyond adding extra runtime and more character backstories. A common complaint is that the films are too long.

Each director’s cut is over three hours, and while some extra scenes add depth, many critics think the movies are filled with too many slow-motion shots and long action scenes. Even the positive reviews agree that the films are a low point in Snyder’s career and note that the changes aren’t significant.

The original movies were 2 hours and 16 minutes and 2 hours and 3 minutes long, while the director’s cuts are 3 hours and 24 minutes and 2 hours and 53 minutes. This long length feels excessive, especially given the slow-motion issues. Forbes’ Paul Tasso wrote on Rotten Tomatoes about the first director’s cut:

The Director’s Cut is longer, bloodier and fixes practically none of the things wrong with the first draft. It is very much the same, not worth watching again, not worth watching for a first time if you waited.

Despite the poor critical reviews, audience scores for the director’s cuts have improved. Though not overwhelmingly positive, they indicate that fans are more accepting of the film’s flaws. So, Rebel Moon might not have avoided low critical scores, but audiences have been more positive, keeping hope alive for a possible third movie.
