“Broke-ass mountain”: Joaquin Phoenix’s “Cold Feet” Puts Hundreds of People Out of a Job as Fans Ridicule the Actor for Backing Out of His Own Project
- Joaquin Phoenix abruptly decided that he no longer wants to be the part of a project that he proposed to Todd Haynes.
- Over the years, Phoenix has done some rather unconventional roles, but dropping out of one like this is a first for him.
- Fans are visibly outraged by what Phoenix has done and how it has put the jobs of hundreds of crew members on the line.
After doing something as bold and daring as Joker, one would think that there is no role that Joaquin Phoenix is incapable of doing or that something could give him “cold feet”. Well, one can be wrong, and that one can be Phoenix himself because the word in the industry is that he has backed out of the project that he laid the foundations of.
In a surprising turn of events, Phoenix, who is known for his phenomenal performances and method acting, abandoned his own project just days before its filming was about to begin. This is a huge blow to everyone involved and the news has now led to public outrage as people on the internet are openly bashing him for such a rash decision.
Joaquin Phoenix Has Abandoned Todd Haynes’ Queer Romance Movie Out of the Blue
Considered one of the greatest actors of the 21st century, Joaquin Phoenix is widely known for his dark and atypical characters. He debuted as an actor alongside his late brother River Phoenix and had his breakthrough role in 1995’s To Die For.
In 2000, Phoenix starred as the villainous Roman emperor Commodus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. The movie, featuring an ensemble cast, was a critical and commercial success. The Quills actor’s performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and this was just the beginning.
In the following years, Phoenix won numerous accolades including a Grammy Award for his role as the musician Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk the Line and an Academy Award for his portrayal of the eponymous character in Joker. None of these roles were easy, but he did all of this and more without much issue.
However, that does not seem to be the case for him this time around as Indie Wire has reported that he has dropped out of a major project. He developed the screenplay for an intense period romance drama set in the 1930s with Todd Haynes (May December) and his frequent collaborator Jon Raymond (Mildred Pierce).
The movie, backed by sales agent MK2 Films and produced by Killer Films, was set to start filming in Guadalajara, Mexico when Phoenix, who was in Los Angeles at the time, dropped out of the project. Sources have claimed that the finances largely depended on his casting, and Variety has reported that the losses could exceed seven figures.
This whole fiasco happened in early July. The worst part is probably that the role cannot be recast. There has also been some speculation that he backed out because of the explicit scenes in the movie although it was he who pushed Haynes to make it an NC-17 film.
Fans Are Not Very Happy with the Move Joaquin Phoenix Has Pulled
Phoenix has been in the industry long enough to know how things exactly work around here and just how much of a blow this would be to his professional career. A source close to Variety claimed that the actor got “cold feet”.
Fans are understandably enraged to the point that they are mocking and calling out the actor for his odd behavior. Here is what some of them have to say:
So far, there have been no official comments from the actor himself, and things are not exactly looking good for him. Hopefully, the crew will find a way to get the production going with or without the actor otherwise, hundreds of people will be out of a job.
