Robert De Niro compared his character William Hale to Donald Trump

Actor Robert De Niro plays the character of William Hale, a prominent landowner on the Osage Indian Reservation who before orchestrating a series of murders in the Osage community to gain control of their oil land makes sure the community trusts him enough. He is the uncle of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart who is used as a pawn in the murders.

The movie premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival where De Niro stated via EW,

“I don’t understand a lot about him. But people do things. He has to be charming, he has to win people over. Part of him is sincere. It’s just that other part where he’s betraying the Osage community. There’s a feeling of entitlement. I guess you could say we became a lot more aware of it after George Floyd, with systemic racism.”

Recently, at the Gotham Awards, Robert De Niro led an eventful Killers of the Flower Moon tribute until he realized that a part of his speech was edited out without his knowledge. He said via Deadline,

“The beginning of my speech was edited out, cut out. I didn’t know about it. And I want to read it. History isn’t history anymore. Truth is not truth. Even facts are being replaced by alternative facts and driven by conspiracy theories and ugliness. Lying has become just another tool in the charlatans’ arsenal. The former president lied to us more than 30,000 times during his four years in office and he’s keeping up the pace in his current campaign of retribution.”

De Niro noted,

“But with all his lies, he can’t hide his soul. He attacks the weak, destroys the gifts of nature and shows disrespect. Filmmakers on other hand aim for truth. We are telling stories about real people.”

The actor mentioned during his speech that Martin Scorsese has illuminated the lessons of history with fascinating and absorbing stories and treats his subjects with honesty and respect.
