Chris Evans Playing Nomad Makes Little Sense Considering He Has Already Played the Role in ‘Infinity War’
- Chris Evans is rumored to return as Nomad in 'Avengers: Doomsday', but it feels redundant as he portrayed something similar in 'Infinity War'.
- After Steve Rogers’ perfect conclusion to his arc, his return as Nomad might undermine his legacy.
- With Sam Wilson as the current Captain America, the potential of Nomad’s arc makes more narrative sense for him.
After Avengers: Endgame ended the Infinity saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now slowly closing chapters to end its multiverse saga. Endgame saw the end of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and the retirement of Chris Evans’ Captain America.
Now after the announcement of Downey’s return as Doctor Doom, fans are speculating about the return of some more familiar faces. With reports of Evan’s return, discussions about his possible character have started already.
Chris Evans’ Nomad rumors for Avengers: Doomsday
The world saw Captain America lifting Mjolnir, fighting Thanos, and traveling back in time to return the acquired stones from alternate timelines in Avengers: Endgame. However, when he returned, he was the old Steve Rogers who stayed back and grew old with Peggy Carter in his original timeline.
It was a perfect conclusion to Steve Rogers’ story arc after all the work he did to save the world and the sacrifices he made. However, according to The Wrap, Chris Evans is set to appear in the MCU once again in Avengers: Doomsday.
It is still unknown what character he will play after that perfect ending of his Captain America run. However, insider Jeff Sneider recently appeared on The Hot Mic podcast where he possibly spoiled Evans’ role in Doomsday. Sneider said,
I’ve heard who the character is… I was having the conversation today, and someone mentioned it…Nomad.
In Marvel comics, Steve Rogers leaves the mantle of Captain America and takes on the identity of Nomad after his clash with the U.S. government. In movies, he played a similar role in Avengers: Infinity War, where he removed all American symbols and marks from his suit.
Rogers essentially becomes a fugitive after he disagrees to sign the Sokovia Accords in Civil War and saves his friend Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, who was a criminal at the time. However, although he left the Avengers, he was still dedicated to saving the world, similar to the comics version of Nomad.
Director Joe Russo also said to LRM Online before the release of Infinity War, “I wouldn’t say that he is exactly Nomad, but he is the spirit of that character.” Now, after recent insights and rumors, it won’t make much sense for Chris Evans to appear as Nomad once again, as it won’t bring anything new to the MCU.
Why Chris Evans can’t play Nomad in Avengers: Doomsday
One major concern with Evans’ role is that Steve Rogers is way past his prime. He is nearly 200 years old and in no shape to take on big fights like he used to do. But to play Nomad, he has to actively take part in such fights, which again raises questions about that possibility.
One reason that might be considered for Captain America to become Nomad is the current scenario of the MCU’s U.S. government. It is now known that Thaddeus Ross will become the president and will also reveal himself as Red Hulk, in Brave New World, which is a good enough reason for Captain America to lose faith in the government.
However, in this regard, it makes much more sense for Sam Wilson, who is the current Captain America, to become Nomad, not the old Steve Rogers. Although the multiverse gives the option of variants, it won’t be very impactful to see a Steve Rogers variant in place of the original.
MCU also provides an option to age or de-age anyone, as seen with Scott Lang when Hulk tries to test time travel for the first time in Endgame. Tony Stark says, “Instead of pushing Lang through time, you might’ve wound up pushing time through Lang.”
This could be a way to de-age Rogers, but it will ruin his story arc. All these reasons raise questions about his Nomad possibility. It might be possible for him to play the role of a mentor like Nick Fury, although he can afford a few more combat scenes as he is still a super soldier.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
