The Lost Daughter actress grabbed the attention at the Taste of Sundance dinner at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse on Thursday night. She took a quick glance around the massive gathering of seated attendees, which included movie stars, auteurs, and Sundance insiders. Dakota Johnson was present to receive the Luca Guadagnino Sundance Institute International Icon Award. Sundance honored the occasion by honoring people who, despite their careers taking them to new heights, have remained true to the festival and everything it stands for. And then the Fifty Shades of Grey actress recently poked fun at the Armie Hammer cannibalism controversy at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

Johnson, who made headlines in 2019 for an awkward conversation with Ellen DeGeneres, also joked that the director, Luca Guadagnino’s failed attempt got her the role of the Peach in Call Me by Your Name.

Dakota Johnson takes a dig at Armie Hammer’s cannibalism scandal

The Black Mass actress joked that she was almost cast as the movie’s iconic peach while applauding the director, Luca Guadagnino, at Opening Night: A Taste of Sundance. Johnson pointed out, “The vision and the style of it is Call Me By Your Name. Sadly, I wasn’t in that one. It was unfortunate.” The Bad Times at the El Royale actress made a crude joke about the Rebecca actor while praising the film’s acclaimed director, Luca Guadagnino.

The Peanut Butter Falcon actress added, “Thank God, though, because I would’ve been another woman that Armie Hammer had tried to eat.” Guadagnino tried to “cast her as the peach in the famous movie Call Me by Your Name,” according to Dakota Johnson, who had collaborated with the director on films like A Bigger Splash and Suspiria. The synopsis of the film claims that Armie Hammer’s character ate a peach after Timothee Chalamet’s character allegedly engaged in s*x acts on it. According to the 33-year-old actress, “It was here at Sundance in 2017 that audiences experienced a movie that is uniquely characterized by Luca’s iconic approach to storytelling.”

On the other hand, she gave Guadagnino the international icon award, and Johnson called him a cinema lover (and Prada). She played the lead in his remake of Suspiria, but when she made a joke about Hammer, everyone in the room can’t stop gasping and laughing out loud.

Johnson’s joke about Armie Hammer was in reference to his online scandal when his alleged messages were posted on social media. The crack was initially met with a few chuckles, but after an awkward pause, Johnson was greeted with rousing applause and cheers. The shocking messages allegedly sent by Armie Hammer to women. These messages appeared to contain graphic s*xual fantasies and mentions of cannibalism, though this has not been confirmed.

Following the scandal, Hammer was dropped from several high-profile movies. These movies and series included a Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy called Shotgun Wedding and a television show called The Offer that was based on the making of The Godfather. Josh Duhamel and Miles Teller took his place as replacements in the respective movies.

According to Variety, Hammer, who co-starred with Timothee Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name, has been charged with s*xual assault, cannibalistic fetishes, and acting abusively toward extramarital partners. Hammer has disputed the accusations.
