Dave Chappelle, who is best known for his satirical comedy sketch series, Chappelle’s Show, gave a surprise performance on Thursday night (May 11) at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. What he observed in the City by the Bay didn’t appeal to him.

The 49-year-old controversial comedian expressed his contempt for the city and posed an important question to the crowd while discussing the issue of homelessness in San Francisco. He even reportedly related a tale about witnessing someone poop in front of the restaurant he was about to eat at.

His perspective on San Francisco wasn’t entirely negative, though, as he referred to the city as his second home before going into all the reasons why he didn’t seem to enjoy being there.

Dave Chappelle Slammed San Francisco During His Surprise Gig

During a surprise performance in Golden Gate City last week, comedian Dave Chappelle criticized the city’s severe homelessness problem by asking:

“What the f*** happened to this place?”

He also related to the Masonic Auditorium audience how, as he was getting ready to eat at an Indian restaurant, he witnessed a homeless person defecating outside. According to SFGATE’s review of the program, Chappelle, 49, claimed the city had changed into a “half ‘Glee,’ half zombie movie,” adding that it had become the Tenderloin.

“Y’all [expletive] need a Batman!” Chappelle suggested. The Tenderloin district of San Francisco is known for its issues with crime, homelessness, and drug abuse. Images from the area, where overdose deaths have skyrocketed in recent months, show addicts smoking drugs openly on the sidewalks.

Without any special guests, Chappelle delivered the last-minute performance in the city, which he referred to as his second home. He brought Twitter scion, Elon Musk onstage during his previous visit to San Francisco, to a chorus of jeers.

In 2021, Chappelle faced criticism for content in his Netflix comedy special The Closer in which some members of the LGBTQ+ community claimed he made fun of transgender people. But in his performance on May 11, he avoided talking about transgender people and instead concentrated on ‌homeless and crime issues in the city.

Homelessness Crises In San Francisco

According to the Daily Mail, 38,000 people are thought to be homeless every night in San Francisco. As a result, it has increased by 35% since 2019. The number of overdose deaths among the city’s homeless population has recently increased.

The city saw a 41% increase in drug-related fatalities during the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2012. Around 200 people died from overdoses between January and March. According to the city’s medical examiner’s most recent data, there were 142 more deaths in 2022 than there were this year.

Coming back to his performance, the concerned audience started shouting questions at Dave Chappelle for about 30 minutes of his show last week.

In order to engage the audience, he also posed questions about the incident in which a homeless man severely ‌beat former San Francisco fire commissioner, Don Carmignani. It was later discovered that Carmignani had, on multiple occasions in the years prior to the attack, sprayed bear spray on homeless people.

For the unversed, this was Chappelle’s third appearance on the show; his first two were in 2016 and 2020, respectively.
