‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Gives Voice to 1 Iconic Scene from Hugh Jackman’s ‘Logan’ That Made Even the Coldest Hearts Shatter Into Pieces
- Deadpool & Wolverine paid a tribute to one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in Logan.
- The final shot of Logan was inspired by the cover of the comic Uncanny Wolverine #251 and so was the scene in Deadpool & Wolverine.
- The opening scene of Deadpool & Wolverine kept the legacy of Wolverine intact, and this left Logan co-writer shocked.
Deadpool & Wolverine sent fans spiraling quite literally. In addition to the numerous cameos including Elektra, Gambit and Blade and the inclusion of Logan Howlett/Wolverine, the film also played a huge tribute to one particularly heart wrenching scene in 2017’s Logan.
MCU’s latest entry is brilliant in more ways than one. Besides the incredibly amazing storyline and dynamic action scenes, the film has also paid attention to details. No wonder the movie has become a domestic as well as global success at the box office.
Deadpool & Wolverine Has Given a Callout to One of the Most Iconic Scenes in Logan
The final shot in Logan features a Christian cross shifted over on one side to resemble the “X” shape of the Saltire, or St Andrew’s cross. This is an obvious reference to the fact that Wolverine is an X-Man, but that is not the only reference here.
The film’s director James Mangold revealed that it is inspired by the Uncanny X-Men #251‘s (titled Fever Dream) cover. He explained the inspiration to Empire Online Podcast:
There’s a fabulous piece of artwork on the cover of an old ‘X-Men’ comic with Wolverine pinned almost like Christ to an X aboard a mound of green skulls. So I can’t take credit for conflating the crucifix and the cross.
The said cover indeed features Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) on a cross even though the skulls are purple and not green. Besides this, the 2017 film also has other similarities with the comic. Just like the comic, the antagonist in the film is Donald Pierce and his army of cyborgs called the Reavers. Additionally, in both media pieces, Logan suffers similar injuries and then left on the cross to suffer from the pain.
Deadpool & Wolverine paid a tribute to this particular storyline in the montage sequence where Deadpool encounters different Wolverines in the multiverse. One of the visuals that particularly draws attention is the one in which a Wolverine variant is being crucified on a cross, complete with its hill of skulls and borderline neon lighting. The scene is reminiscent of not only the 2017 movie, but also potentially seems to draw inspiration from the comic.
Deadpool & Wolverine Respected the Martyr-Like Ending to Wolverine’s Legacy in Logan
Deadpool & Wolverine answered the most crucial question that everyone was asking, and it was about Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine since he was dead in Logan. The question was answered clearly in the opening sequence itself and it left even the latter film’s co-writer Michael Green in shock.
In an interview with IGN, Green admitted that he thought he knew how they would explain Wolverine’s return, but he was not prepared for what was awaiting him in the cinemas.
I’m like, ‘I think I know what’s gonna happen.’ And I did not know! I didn’t know they were gonna go that far. You weren’t meant to take seriously that they were, like, digging him up, and that it was really him.
It felt less like they were trying to change the ending of Logan as they were contending with not feeling that they wanted to make a movie as good as they felt Logan was, which is a huge compliment!
Unable to stomach the fact that Wolverine is really dead, Deadpool tries to prove it by digging up his grave only to find his corpse in there. Then, the Merc with the Mouth uses those bones to fight off an entire group of Time Variance Authority officers.
