Fans wonder if Deadpool will break the fourth wall in Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool as a comic book character is popular for breaking the fourth wall, and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is lauded for the same trait. Deadpool initially appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, but fans expressed their disappointment with the character’s portrayal.

So, when Rhette Reese and Paul Wernick were writing the script for 2016’s Deadpool, they reportedly worked with Reynolds to adapt the character most faithfully, along with working on his trait of breaking the fourth wall. Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth character has free reign to say whatever he wants to say, and ahead of the release of the third installment, fans wonder if the antihero managed to break the fourth wall.

An X account at MCU Film News noted, ‘What if Deadpool were to break the fourth wall in this scene and tell Sony to sell the Spider-Man rights back to Marvel? How hilarious would that be?’ If the character did break the fourth wall and address Sony, then Deadpool & Wolverine would be the first movie to address Sony in a Marvel movie scene.

Fans believe that this could happen because, as Reynolds stated in interviews, they got full support from the studios to bring their vision to life. It is a possibility that he managed to pull this off too. Plus, Deadpool & Wolverine retained their R-rating and became the first Marvel movie with an R-rating.

It won’t be the first time that Merc with a Mouth decides to break the fourth wall, as in 2016’s movie when Colossus handcuffs himself to Wade, he says, You ever see 127 Hours? Spoiler Alert’. In the sequel, Wade is stabbed in the neck by Cable, got offended, and said, ‘So dark. Are you sure you’re not from the DC Universe?’

In the first installment, Wade Wilson directly speaks to the audience while catching them up to speed about his life. Ryan Reynolds seems like an ideal choice to play Deadpool, as he is not only committed to the character, but he has adapted the personality and traits of Deadpool, which has made him one of the most beloved characters in the MCU.

Ryan Reynolds explains why only his character gets to break the fourth wall

Deadpool & Wolverine’s release is just around the corner, and everyone seems to be excited about the release. Fans are hoping that, just like Merc with a Mouth, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine gets the opportunity to break the fourth wall and talk directly into the camera. But Reynolds has explained why only his character gets to do that.In an interview with Vanity Fair, he explained,

There are rules. Very specific rules. You would diminish the stakes in the film if everyone—or even anyone else—was also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who can do that. If everyone did that, then you would no longer invest in that character as much.

The Canadian actor explained that one wants to believe that the villain is a villain and that the co-star’s character is also real. He added that his character can undermine that because they don’t want the audience to take him as seriously. The actor noted that he needs people as invested as humanly possible in every other character, knowing that Deadpool is the unreliable narrator.

Hugh Jackman explained that Ryan Reynolds describes his character’s brain as a half-baked omelet. He continued by stating that whatever Reynolds’ character is doing to the camera and Wolverine is just another layer of annoying crap that he has to put up with. Shawn Levy confirmed that Wolverine won’t be talking to the camera, but his performance in the movie gives it gravitas and a raw and soulful quality, which is unbelievable.

Deadpool & Wolverine comes out on July 26, 2024.
