- Death of a Unicorn has a unique story and will feature an ensemble cast.
Leave it to A24 to take the audience for a wild ride with the most bizarre movie concepts they have ever heard of, but would still willingly watch. The upcoming horror comedy Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father-daughter duo will be the newest addition to the independent powerhouse studio’s portfolio.
A24 is widely known for distributing unique, auteur-driven films and TV projects which often have a modest budget in comparison to some major Hollywood studios. Over the years, it has gained mainstream recognition with movies like Moonlight, Uncut Gems, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. It is now set to touch down on the horror-comedy genre with Death of a Unicorn which has recently got its new official poster.
Death of a Unicorn has got an interesting new poster and an announcement for trailer release
Death of a Unicorn is joining the growing collection of avant-garde dark comedies which are a blend of fantastical elements and real scenarios. The scenarios are more often than not so unconventional and unsettling that the audience would probably be skeptical had it been not for the light or comedic takes on them.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Nicolas Cage’s Dream Scenario, Ari Aster’s Beau is Afraid, and just about any Wes Anderson movie are some of the biggest examples of this category. Beau is Afraid is also produced by A24 so the studio is not exactly a stranger to this genre of films.
That said, A24 has recently dropped the official poster of the movie Death of a Unicorn on X. The film is aptly named considering it will actually deal with the death of the mystical one-horned creature. According to the studio’s announcement, a trailer for it will be released tomorrow.
The pairing up of the Marvel alum Paul Rudd with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is quite intriguing. While Rudd is primarily known for starring as Ant-Man, he has also appeared in lighthearted comedic roles. He also starred in the horror movies, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Ortega has also established her name in the horror genre with movies like Scream V, Scream VI, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. She is also no stranger to working with A24 as she starred in the horror film, X. She also appeared in the erotic thriller, Miller’s Girl.
Everything we know about Death of a Unicorn so far
The production of Death of a Unicorn began in July 2023 in Hungary. Despite the SAG-AFTRA strike, the movie continued filming in the summer of last year due to an interim agreement between A24 and the labor union because the production house is not a part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The movie follows Rudd and Ortega as the father-daughter duo Elliot and Ridley. They are driving to a crisis management summit with Elliot’s boss, Dell Leopold (Richard E. Grant), and Leopold’s family when they hit a unicorn who dies on the spot. Not knowing how to deal with the situation, they bring the dead creature with them to the retreat.
Leopold is the CEO of a pharmaceutical company and he and his family seize the creature. On performing scientific experiments on its body, they find out that it has supernatural curative properties that they want to exploit. It is not until later that they will realize that there are deadly repercussions for their actions. This implies that the movie will most probably have a deep message about the evils of greed and entitlement.
The film is written and directed by Alex Scharfman, who has produced movies like Blow the Man Down and Resurrection. According to Deadline, the cast also includes the likes of Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Richard E. Grant (Saltburn, Doctor Who), Sunita Mani (GLOW), Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead), Téa Leoni (Flirting with Disaster), Stephen Park (Asteroid City), and Anthony Carrigan (Barry). The release date for the movie has not been announced yet but the poster suggests that it will be in spring 2025.
