Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece might probably be the greatest piece of fiction of the 21st century. The animation has been airing for almost 25 years now and has been at the top of the charts for most of its years. However, in recent times, it would seem that Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus is dropping in popularity amongst young children.

A survey taken for Generation Alpha would suggest a drop in the popularity of One Piece and a major hike in the popularity of Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer series. Here is a little more detail on the Survey.

A survey conducted by Alpha Generation Lab made some shocking revelations about the popularity of anime among Generation Alpha of Japan. As per PR Times, the survey collected data from 600 children and parents in the first grade of elementary school (roughly around 5-6 years old) to the third grade of junior high school (roughly 13-14 years old).

However, to everyone’s surprise, the survey showed that among the children born between 2010 and 2024 in Japan, Demon Slayer received almost double the votes of One Piece, ie. 40%, compared to One Piece’s 20.8%. However, this wasn’t all, as Detective Conan and Spy X Family also exceeded Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece in votes.

When asked about Alpha Generation’s favorite anime/manga, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba came in first with 40% of the votes. Detective Conan came in second place with 27.8% and Spy x Family came in third with 23.3%. One Piece came in a surprising fourth place with 20.8%, lower than what most people expected. Oshi no Ko came not far behind with 19.3% of the votes. What came as a shock was Jujutsu Kaisen not being able to crack the top 5, in terms of popularity among the Alpha Gen in Japan.

Detective Conan, despite airing longer than One Piece, still managed to come in two positions higher among the Alpha Generation. However, the show’s popularity gained a massive boost after the movie’s release back in April 2024, which had reportedly drawn in around 10 million viewers. Detective Conan has managed to maintain its popularity among its audience for around 28 years now. And there is a good reason for the show maintaining its position as one of the top anime and Manga series out there.

Detective Conan is a classic crime series that has been running for almost 30 years. Each episode presents a seemingly impossible crime, and we get to see the brilliant Shinichi Kudo aka. Conan Edogawa unravels the truth using logic, deduction, and a healthy dose of gadgets. This, while seemingly simple, has managed to captivate fans, offering a puzzle to solve alongside the characters.

Conan, despite being the main protagonist of the show, doesn’t always have to carry the series. The supporting cast of the show is incredibly diverse and has been constantly growing throughout the years. Characters such as the Detective Boys bring their own personality to the show. Characters such as forensic scientists, the police, and a wide cast of suspects help the show connect with the viewers.

Watching Conan piece together the clues and expose the culprit is not only entertaining, but also carries its own sense of inspiration for young viewers. The older viewers of the show can appreciate the minor details that Gosho Aoyama adds to his popular manga and anime series.

You can stream Demon Slayer and One Piece on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. While Detective Conan is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
