Denzel Washington Almost Ruined His Career By Kissing Tom Cruise’s Ex-Wife In $3.9M Movie
Hollywood is no stranger to the making and breaking of any actor, while one movie can make an actor a big star, it won’t take even a ten-second scene to spell the end of a promising trajectory. The best example of this is none other than Denzel Washington one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood when his career almost took a surprising nosedive in the late 1980s, all because of his one kiss with Tom Cruise’s ex-wife, Mimi Rogers.
Denzel Washington’s Career Was Almost Over After His Kiss with Mimi Rogers
By the late 90s, Denzel Washington had established himself as one of the most acclaimed actors in Hollywood with a growing fanbase, which he truly understood only after his on-screen kiss with Tom Cruise’s ex-wife, Mimi Rogers.
The event in question is concerned with Washington’s 1989 film The Mighty Quinn, in which he shared an on-screen kiss with co-star Mimi Rogers. Even though this on-screen kiss was intended to be nothing but a typical romantic scene, it turned out to be a career-threatening situation for Washington.
The issue was not with the kiss but with the core audience of Washington. Washington was the ultimate hero among Black women and this kissing scene didn’t sit well with them. This unsettling response from his core audience left Washington with no other choice than to chop off his kissing scene from the final cut of the movie.
After this incident, Washington was very selective with his roles as well as his scenes in the movie. Throughout his career, Washington ensured not to disappoint his core audience.
