Despite Creating Bridgerton and Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes Realized She Wasn’t Cut Out To Do One Thing in Hollywood Thanks to an Iconic ‘Star Wars’ Director
Shonda Rhimes is best known for her creation of the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy and the steamy Netflix hit Bridgerton. She is a genius at weaving stories that grab us and won’t let go! Recently, however, the Chicago native surprised fans by sharing a personal revelation.
Rhimes, known for her powerful writing, once thought she wanted to direct. But, after talking with director J.J. Abrams, she realized her true passion lies in storytelling. The writer understood that she doesn’t have to be a jack-of-all-trades in the film industry, but can instead focus on what truly sets her soul ablaze. This honest reflection shows how important it is to figure out what you’re best at!
Shonda Rhimes Realized One Thing After Talking to J.J. Abrams
Shonda Rhimes admitted she once thought she wanted to direct, but never really built the network of contacts that might have helped her. Another reason was her shyness. The screenwriter also considers herself an introvert.
That all changed with a simple phone call with J.J. Abrams (known for Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens). As the 54-year-old said, she’s close with his wife, Katie McGrath, which led to her becoming friends with him as well. Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter:
I went through a phase where I thought I wanted to direct. I called J.J. and I was like, ‘Tell me all about your experience.’ And we had long talks about it, and in those long talks, J.J. was ecstatic about the concept of writing and directing, and I realized, this is literally the last thing I want to do.
She realized that directing would take her away from what she truly loves—writing! For Rhimes, writing is where the magic happens. She loves creating characters, plot twists, and dialogue that make our favorite shows unforgettable. Directing would mean less time for writing, and that’s just not her cup of tea.
Shonda Rhimes Found Her Passion in Writing Over Directing
Shonda Rhimes’ love for writing goes beyond just penning a script. She loves seeing her characters come to life through the actors’ performances. It’s a team effort that brings her joy! Plus, she values her family time and knows that directing would mean long hours on set, away from her kids.
She’s happy to prioritize her family and keep a healthy balance between work and home life. For Rhimes, writing is where her heart is, and she’s grateful to be able to do what she loves without sacrificing precious time with her loved ones. As The Queen Charlotte writer continued:
Because I couldn’t be off writing another project or running a room. I’d have to be directing all day. And honestly, that’s not the fun part for me.
The mother of three has also found her true calling as a showrunner, and it changed everything! She started Shondaland, a production company that creates hit shows with diverse characters and stories. By following her love for writing and storytelling, Rhimes has opened doors for other storytellers, too.
