Bill Murray is undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed actors in Hollywood. He has been in the entertainment scene for almost 5 decades. He has seen the world change and evolve into what it is today. Having his support for a presidential campaign would certainly be a big deal considering the huge fan following he has amassed over the years.

With modern technology rapidly taking over media, it is quite easy to fabricate available stuff in a way that can fool people into believing anything. Recently, a video of Bill Murray endorsing US presidential candidate Donald Trump has gone viral on the internet. While some were naive enough to believe it, others saw through the web of lies woven carefully.

There is a reason it is advised to not believe everything that is on the internet. Now that AI is such a threat to identity with its surprisingly convincing images and voice renditions, it is more important than ever to be careful about what we see on the internet.

Not so long ago, deep fakes of Taylor Swift endorsing Donald Trump were circulating. The songstress took to her Instagram account to clarify that she was endorsing Kamala Harris for the US elections this year and not Trump, who had very conveniently posted those AI images of the popstar claiming that she was endorsing him.

Recent history seems to be repeating itself as a video of Bill Murray seemingly endorsing Trump has convinced some that it is, in fact, true when it could not be further from reality. The video is clipped from a November 2016 interview by Tracks, a multi-language TV program, that’s available on Facebook. Murray can be heard saying:

He’s [Donald Trump] just such a different character than anyone who’s ever been a president of the United States.

The doubts come in when the video abruptly cuts to an accurate breakdown from Murray of the issues disillusioning American voters. All of what he says is true, but what is not true is that he is endorsing a Republican candidate because the video has been obviously edited. The edited version is proving to be quite misleading as some people, especially Trump supporters, are blindly believing it.

Bill Murray’s Political History is Quite Complicated

Some celebrities like to keep their distance from politics while others find letting their fans know about their stance necessary. It is safe to say the Ghostbusters star’s political history is more complicated than that.

To begin with, according to the Hollywood Gazette, during his Presidential campaign in Charleston, South Carolina, Murray called Trump a “Hitler-wannabe”. He also lampooned Trump’s White House Chief strategist Steve Bannon on Saturday Night Live. This makes it quite hard to believe that he would endorse Trump.

On the other hand, in 2018, the comedian praised the GOP tax cuts (via Fox News). During an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in that same year, he also criticized the way Democrats were addressing only specific parts of the population rather than the entirety of it. This could easily cause anyone to get lost in translation about Murray’s true bias when it came to politics.
