Is Johnny Depp being boycotted by Hollywood?

At a press conference for the film, Jeanne Du Barry which made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered a seven-minute standing ovation, Johnny Depp opened up about the time everything felt as if it was a joke. From being one of the most beloved actors in the industry to being one of the most hated, the actor was bamboozled at how quickly everybody changed their colors. Therefore he was asked about the sentiments he shared in a Sunday Times interview previously in August 2021 where he stated,

“Did I feel a boycott by Hollywood? Well, you’d have to not have a pulse to feel at that point, ‘None of this is happening, it’s just a weird joke or I have been asleep for 35 years.’”

He further added,

“Of course, when you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing, because of something that is merely a bunch of kind of vowels and consonants floating in the air, you feel a boycott .”

This was his first official social appearance after the trial. And he appeared quite defensive and stated anything and everything that people read about him online was majorly fictional. According to him, he had to suffer a lot in the wake of the defamation case, as he was jobless and being called names continuously. From getting cut out of movies to losing big opportunities, the future seemed very bleak to him.

What does Johnny Depp think of Hollywood now?

The actor Johnny Depp appeared very calm and collected at Cannes, he was taken aback by the standing ovation and the love of the people that was showered on him earlier this week. This was a big moment for him since it marked his return to the big leagues. Therefore when asked, if he shares the same sentiments he used to share about Hollywood before. He very confidently shared,

“Do I feel a boycott now? No, not at all. I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t have much further need for Hollywood myself,”

He then further stated,

“I think it’s a very strange, funny time where everybody wants to be themselves, but they can’t, they must fall in line, conform — and if you want to lead this life, I’ll be on the other side.”

Depp then went further to express his thoughts on the word ‘comeback’. He said,

“They’re using it as a kind of catchphrase. ‘The guy’s making a comeback.’ I’ve had about 17 comebacks by the way, apparently,”

He then continued,

“I keep wondering about the word ‘comeback’ because I didn’t go anywhere–As a matter of fact, I live about 45 minutes away so, yeah. Maybe, maybe people stopped calling. I don’t know what their fear was at the time. I didn’t go nowhere. I’ve been sitting around. So ‘comeback’ is almost like I’m going to come out and do a tap dance or something like that.”

And regarding the awkwardness and the controversy surrounding his presence at the gala, he stated,

“What if they said to me, I cannot go to McDonald’s for life because somewhere if you got them all in one room, 39 people saw me watching me eat a Big Mac on a loop. Who are they? Why do they care? Some species or tower of mashed potatoes covered in light from a computer screen? Anonymous.”

All in all, his most awaited return has the audience enamored still, as he continues to grow, the actor has learned a lot of valuable lessons these past years and is thus very grateful for whatever he has left. Fans are happy to see him finally return after a three-year hiatus.
