Did Johnny Depp Risk His Life for Tim Burton’s $475M Movie With Helena Bonham Carter?
Johnny Depp is one of the best actors in Hollywood. He gained worldwide recognition with his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the adventure film series Pirates of the Caribbean. He has starred in numerous great movies, and his name graced the headlines of several publications due to his highly publicized defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.
In his career spanning nearly four decades, Johnny Depp collaborated with Tim Burton several times. Two of these collaborations Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride happened in 2005. Like any other normal person, Depp too has allergies, and hilariously, the thing he is known to be allergic to is chocolate.

Johnny Depp’s Allergy to Chocolate Didn’t Affect His Career Choices
The original movie adaptation of the Roald Dahl-penned classic was released in 1971 and Gene Wilder portrayed the candymaker Willy Wonka in the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Wonka was much different from Wilder’s, but he kept up with the mysterious aura that the character had.
According to Marie Claire, Depp was allergic to chocolate as a kid. When he was seven years old, he suffered from rashes that were caused due to the allergy. Thankfully, as he grew older, his allergic reactions to the popular dessert subsided. The various ingredients in chocolate such as nuts, milk, and other allergens like gluten, soy, and corn might trigger allergic reactions in one’s body.
The What’s Eating Gilbert Grape actor has never been known to be restricted by any obstacles in his way. Besides, he had worked with Tim Burton three times before doing this movie, so he was probably reluctant to pass on the chance to collaborate with the legendary director again. The fact that he was ready to neglect his discomfort with chocolate proves his dedication to being a great entertainer.
Johnny Depp’s Love For Portraying Different Characters
Starring in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was not the first time Johnny Depp decided to test his limits of being around chocolate. In 2000, he starred as the lead character Roux in the Juliette Binoche starrer 2001 romcom Chocolat in which he was eating the chocolate that his love interest successful chocolatier Vianne Rocher (Binoche) would make.
In an interview with the UK’s City Life magazine (via express.co.uk) in 2005, Depp revealed that he does not like doing the same kind of characters again and again. Speaking of his love for experimenting with different roles, he said:
“With each character, as an actor, I think you owe it more to the audience, not to yourself or the filmmaker, to try something different each time. I think it’s important to try to keep playing different types of guys and to keep exploring because you are constantly learning. If you keep playing the same characters it’s like, you know, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, meatloaf. It’s the same old thing over again.”
Depp also went on to say that the fact that he was still getting offers for jobs in the entertainment industry was quite shocking considering his constant experimentation with new roles. Perhaps, it is this relentless nature that makes him a fan-favorite actor.
