Director Joe Johnston Recalls Hayley Atwell’s Marvel Cinematic Universe Audition
Joe Johnston, director of Captain America, recalls Hayley Atwell’s audition for entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She delivered a scene that blew the expectations of the people away.
It Was Really Emotional
The enduring popularity of Peggy Carter in the MCU could be accumulated by the depth Haley Atwell brought to her character. It was quite evident ever since her screen test during Captain America: The First Avenger.
As revealed in Paul Terry and Tara Bennett’s book, The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe Johnston almost cried while Atwell was reprising Peggy and Roger’s radio call. He said that they all were sitting in the room when the filming of the scene began. As Chris wasn’t available in town, his assistant was the one who was reading all his dialogues.
Atwell And Marvel Cinematic Universe
Apparently, it was Hayley’s delivery that gave the situation and the scene an exceptional gravitas that led Johnston to think that he is going to burst into tears. Even his first assistant director had the same feeling along with the makeup and hair team. The book described how they all were actually comforting each other after crying a lot. It was Johnston who actually acknowledged the emotions he felt that during and echoed “It was just so amazing.”
After becoming one of the most prominent characters of The First Avenger, Hayley reprised Peggy Carter in The Winter Soldier as well before appearing in Age of Ultron, Endgame, and Ant-Man. Atwell has also made an appearance in Agent Carter and Captain America: Civil War. Recently, Peggy’s niece, Sharon Carter’s story got highlighted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Apart from all her live-action roles, Hayley Atwell also voiced Peggy Carter in Avengers Assemble season 4 and season 5. She even voiced in Marvel’s What If…?. In the season finale of What If…?, Carter got recruited by Uatu the Watcher to play one of the members of Guardians of the Multiverse. Even the post-credits scene hinted at a continuation of Peggy’s storyline from the 1940s over its Season 2.
