Disney Star Coco Lee, Best Known for Mulan, Passes Away at 48 After Committing Suicide
Hong Kong-born American singer Coco Lee, famous for her songs in movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), has unfortunately passed away. According to her family, Lee had been suffering from depression for a long time and it finally took its toll on the singer this week.
The 48-year-old had made a name for herself first in Hong Kong and gradually expanded internationally. Another of her popular work was a song in Mulan’s Mandarin version. Apart from that, her songs have also been included in many Hollywood movies.
Coco Lee Passed Away at 48 After Battling Depression
A day ago on Wednesday, it was announced that Hong Kong-born singer Coco Lee has passed away after an attempted suicide two days prior. She had been 48 at the time of his death. Her sisters Nancy Lee and Carol Lee released a joint statement via Instagram where they detailed their late sister’s death and the circumstances before that.
It seems that the singer had been suffering from depression for a long time, which only got worse with time, especially in the last few months. The announcement said,
“Although CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.”
Furthermore, after her attempted suicide on Monday this week she went into a coma following which she never regained consciousness. Her sisters have requested her fans to share joy and happiness just like how the late singer did with her songs.
Only last year, the A Love Before Time singer shared via her Instagram that she had been having a very difficult time. At the time she wrote about putting a female warrior attitude to confront any issues coming her way.
A Brief Look at Coco Lee’s Career
The singer began her career back in the 90s and made a name for herself as a promising pop singer in Hong Kong. But what brought her onto the international scene was her song A Love Before Time in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). The song was nominated for an Academy Award back in 2001.
Apart from that, Lee has had multiple hit albums to her name. A song from her 1999 album Just No Other Way even featured in a Julia Roberts movie. Her career as a singer and songwriter spanned 30 years. Additionally, she also voiced the singing part for Disney’s Mulan in the Mandarin version (1998).
