Disney’s Smart Play: Adding a Tiny Detail Used in a $2.6 Billion Animated Franchise Made the Frozen Movie Series Even More Iconic
Disney is one of the biggest media conglomerates in the world. From live-action movies and shows to animated ones, for years, the company has excelled at making some of the best projects to date. One of its most commercially and critically successful movie series is the Frozen film series.
Disney movies are often full of carefully interwoven small details that people might miss while watching the movie for the first time. However, eagle-eyed fans notice these details and understand their importance. Frozen stands no exception.
The Frozen Film Franchise Had This One Little Detail That Some Might Have Missed
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 fairy tale The Snow Queen, Frozen, released in 2013, follows the story of Anna, the Princess of Arendelle, who embarks on a journey with her iceman Kristoff, his reindeer Sven, and the snowman Olaf to find her sister Elsa whose powers have accidentally trapped their kingdom in eternal winter.
During the coronation ceremony in the movie, Elsa has her long blonde hair in a tight bun with a braid wrapped around it. This might seem like a simple hairdo, but it reflects her attempts to maintain control and poise during the ceremony. Later on, she is seen with her hair in a loose braid which represents her liberation from societal expectations as she embraces her true self.
The second Frozen movie, released six years after the first one, shows Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf on a journey to find out the source of Elsa’s powers. They reach an enchanted forest where they learn about their family’s past and the source of Elsa’s abilities.
At the beginning of this movie, Elsa has the same hairdo as the one she had towards the end of the first film. The loose braid is more refined and elegant, representing her continued self-acceptance. At the end of the same movie, Elsa completely lets go of her hair. She embraces her identity as the Fifth Spirit, which symbolizes her ultimate freedom.
Will There Be a Third Frozen Film?
The two Frozen films released so far have earned $1.27 billion and $1.45 billion, respectively. Fans have obviously loved both movies and luckily for them, a third movie is on the books.
During Disney’s Q1 2024 earnings call on February 8, 2024, CEO Bob Iger said (via Digital Spy):
We’re already looking forward to 2026 and beyond with Frozen 3, the first Toy Story movie since 2019, and a new Star Wars movie that brings the Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen for the very first time.
Although there is still a long way to go until the movie’s release, it is good to know that there is going to be a third movie. As of now, no other details are known about the movie.
Both Frozen movies are available for streaming on Disney+.
