When The Batman hit theaters in 2022, it was well received by fans, especially after the expectations set by Christian Bale-Nolan’s trilogy and amid Ben Affleck’s uncertainty. The casting choice of Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight was loved by critics as well. However, beneath the aesthetics, there is a story that might change how viewers look at Gotham’s protector.

It is evident that superhero movies are big business these days. They gross millions in ticket sales and become a part of pop culture. However, what the audience doesn’t see very often are the things that go into preparing these blockbuster sequences. There is a common misconception that everything is CGI these days, which is not exactly true.

Pattinson’s experience filming The Batman is a testament to his dedication. The discomfort and dangerous situations he went through show just how much work goes into bringing favorite comic book characters to life.

The Batman suit is as uncomfortable as it is cool and heroic. Imagine wearing that suit for hours daily, for months, and in the rain while doing stunts. That’s basically what Robert Pattinson had to deal with while filming The Batman.

In an interview on Collider Ladies Night, Pattinson’s Tenet co-star Elizabeth Debicki revealed that being Batman was extremely uncomfortable for him. She mentioned how Pattinson had to struggle with bathroom breaks and stunts.

He was like ‘it’s amazing. It’s also extremely uncomfortable’. He’s like ‘I’m in a leathery plastic suit with a rain machine for like five hours’ and I remember thinking that sounds so hard and of course I love the movie so much but I didn’t think of them when I was watching. I was like, ‘imagine how sticky and then you need to pee’ and it’s like such a big deal.

But Pattinson’s discomfort didn’t stop there. He injured his wrist while doing a stunt and he was filming with a broken wrist. According to Insider, in one particular scene, Pattinson took 40 takes because Matt Reeves was not satisfied with the shot. In an interview with People, he revealed the struggles he had to go through while using the portable toilets on set, as his suit prohibited his movements and he couldn’t turn around to see the position of the things.

While talking to Entertainment Weekly, Pattinson described his exhausting 18-hour day work schedule, starting at 4:30 AM with training, then filming and again training. Moreover, he got COVID himself, which increased the complications further.

Pattinson said to GQ that he felt “very much alone” during the shoot. Because of the night shoots and not being able to leave the studio in costume, he barely knew what was going on in the outside world. It’s like he was living in his own little Batcave.

After all the efforts, Pattinson is set to return in The Batman Part II which is on its way with a release date set for October 2, 2026. It looks like it will take a long time, but good things take time, and fans have high expectations for the sequel.

But that’s not all. Some speculation suggests that Pattinson’s Batman might be seen in The Penguin, which will be a spin-off series featuring Colin Farrell. Although nothing has been officially said about it yet, it would be nice to have a little more of Batman before the major sequel.

The Penguin will be set right after The Batman, as the main character, Oswald Cobblepot, tries to become Gotham’s new crime boss. While talking to MovieZine, Farrell referred to the series as “super dark” and “twisted.” It sounds like a perfect fit for Pattinson’s gritty Batman world.

While fans wait to see Pattinson with the cowl again on the big screen, it appears that Gotham is going to be a busy city in the near future. And the next time anyone watches The Batman or the upcoming sequel, perhaps he or she will think about all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into bringing this version of the Dark Knight to life.

The Batman is available on Prime Video, Netflix and Hulu.
