Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Was Influenced By Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ
During the promotion of Dune: Part Two Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve spoke about what inspired him to go ahead with the fantasy drama project. The Arrival director revealed that he was inspired by the legendary director Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed project The Last Temptation of Christ. The 1988 released project featured Spider-Man star Willem Dafoe as the protagonist. While talking to Esquire recently, he said-
“It’s a movie that absolutely blew me away. It’s an exploration of the doubt of the human who is obsessed with visions and ideas that are bigger than him […] it’s a portrait of Christ that always moved me because it brought so much humanity in that figure.”
While drawing parallels between Dune and The Last Temptation of Christ, Villeneuve said-
“It was pretty close to the trajectory of Paul Atreides. I must say, in the way Martin Scorsese portrayed that period of time, there’s something about the level of precision of the details, it’s like he had taken a time machine. It was a movie that tremendously influenced me as I was doing this adaptation.”
Dune franchise is based on the book of the same name authored by Frank Herbert. According to the sources, Denis Villeneuve is currently busy with the development of the third and final chapter of Dune.
