The official synopsis of Kung Fu Panda 4 mentions-

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

American actor Jack Black will return as the voice behind the adorable Panda. Viola Davis would be doing the voice-over for the shape-shifting antagonist character Chameleon. Academy Award winner Ke Huye Quan is the voice behind the Sunda Pangolin, Han and Awkwafina will be joining the cast as Zhen, a corsac fox.

Jack Black On Being The Voice Behind Po In The Kung Fu Panda Franchise

During an interview with Polygon in 2022, Jack Black spoke about being the voice behind one of the most loved characters of all time. The American actor opened up on what drew him towards Netflix’s animated series Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight. The King Kong actor was convinced by DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg when he offered him the Kung Fu Panda project. He recalled-

“Jeffrey Katzenberg told me, You don’t have to worry about creating some new character. I want you to be you. And he got some footage, I think it was audio from School of Rock, or High Fidelity, one of my earlier movies, and he had the animators do a short animation using that audio.”

He further continued to say-

And I was like, Oh, all right, now I get it. So when I first started, it was a fun opportunity to just be myself, and let the animators do all the cool fighting sequences. I got to be kind of a superhero but with all of my natural instincts.”

Over a period of fourteen years, the Kung Fu Panda franchise has spawned three movies and two television shows. The ensemble cast, good storyline, and the empathetic side of the different characters from the franchise have helped it become one of the biggest projects from Dreamworks.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is in theaters on March 8, 2024.
