While many filmmakers try their best to elevate the standards of cinema through impactful and bold dialogues, Denis Villeneuve doesn’t prioritize these elements. According to him, the main elements that make a movie compelling and engaging enough are high-quality visuals and sound effects. He told The Times  that:

“Frankly, I hate dialogue…  I remember movies because of a strong image. I’m not interested in dialogue at all. Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but it is something not obvious when you watch movies today.”

While explaining that a film becomes memorable with Visuals and sound effects, Villeneuve added:

“Movies have been corrupted by television.”

By this, Denis Villeneuve explained that movies have now begun to follow TV shows, where the characters are mostly indulged in talking and delivering strong dialogues. The director wants to erase this shift and would love to craft a film that “doesn’t feel like an experiment but does not have a single word in it either”. The Prisoners creator believes that movies are majorly about what fans hear and see, rather than the words.

Each filmmaker has a unique way of understanding the meaning of cinema. Similarly, for Denis Villeneuve, it’s the visual effects and engaging sound effects that make a movie pleasurable. However, not every fan agrees with what the Blade Runner 2049 maker believes. Many viewers and fans are often drawn towards a film due to its impactful dialogues, and the actor who’s delivering them.

Many fans have highlighted the work of Quentin Tarantino and his take on crafting some of the best dialogues in films. The filmmaker is highly recognized for using obscenity in his dialogue to make it more real, and this is how fans and viewers can connect with a character.

However, for Denis Villeneuve, movies must be engaging enough without dialogues, and have the power to deeply resonate with viewers without feeling the lack of words.

Dune 2 will hit theatres on March 1, 2024.
