After Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, Garfield went on to play the same character in a separate Spider-Man movie, however, Emma Stone who portrayed Peter Parker’s love interest did not star as Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson and refused to film an iconic scene from the previous film stating that her character is different than that of Dunst’s.

Stone initially desired to play Dunst’s character but eventually fell harder for Gwen Stacy and while filming for  The Amazing Spider-Man, with her ex-boyfriend as Spider-Man, Emma Stone refused to recreate the iconic kiss that Maguire and Dunst were a part of. The La La Land star spoke to the Chicago Sun-Times (via MTV News) and said:

“Why would we do an upside-down kiss? I’m not Mary Jane. I’m Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man film. New girl. New kiss. I wanted to do different kisses to make our mark.”

The Easy A star explained that she wanted a unique and distinct kiss between Stacy and Spider-Man as her character was different and felt like her Spider-Man was different from what Maguire depicted. In the comics, Gwen Stacy is Peter Parker’s first love and Stone wanted to showcase a special bond between their characters that would showcase the love between Stacy and Parker.

“Emma kept on texting me. She was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film? And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The Silence star gave Emma Stone the same treatment he gave to fans and journalists when they tried to know about Garfield’s role in the movie. Finally when the third installment was out and the whole world knew that Andrew Garfield successfully fooled everyone, Emma Stone wasn’t forgiving him. The actor added:

“She was like, ‘Shut up. Just tell me.’ I’m like, ‘I honestly’— I kept it going, even with her. And then she saw it. She was like, ‘You’re a jerk.”

The Under the Silver Lake actor mentioned that her ex-girlfriend and Oscar winner was furious at him for lying about his contribution. However, the film turned out to be exceptional and fans were thrilled to witness Tobey Maguire alongside Andrew Garfield with the newest web-slinger Tom Holland.
