Tom Cruise Pays For Suri’s College Tuition But Stays Distant
Suri Cruise is stepping into adulthood and starting her new life as a college student at Carnegie Mellon University. However, despite this contentious relationship, Tom Cruise is fulfilling every obligation on her financial front. According to Daily Mail, the actor will spend $65,000 per year to pay for Suri’s college tuition.
Cruise has always served child support and has provided for her education fund, hospital bills, and other extracurricular activities, although he was hardly involved in her life in the last 11 years. After divorce proceedings, Katie Holmes got full custody of Suri. However, Cruise committed to taking full responsibility for Suri’s education and anything related to education as child support.
As Suri has turned 18 now, there is a change in the financial position. Cruise will not have to pay $400,000 every year to Holmes for child support. But his commitment to her education is still intact. A friend of Cruise told Daily Mail,
Tom is indeed paying for Suri’s tuition, he has always paid for her schooling and would never stop as he is a stand-up guy. He has never hesitated paying his daughter’s child support and expenses. He does not go back on his word. He is fulfilling his obligation.
It appears that Suri wanted some normalcy in her life, as she was spotted moving into the college dorms with her mother, while Cruise was notably missing. His monetary responsibilities have not been enough to reduce the differences between father and daughter.
Suri Drops Tom Cruise’s Last Name
Suri has chosen to abandon the ‘Cruise’ surname, which says a lot about her relationship with her father. According to Page Six, she has preferred to use her mother’s middle name, ‘Noelle’. The change of name was done before entering college, and it shows her desire to leave her father’s shadow and build her own identity.
The last time Suri and Tom Cruise were seen together was in public in April 2013. That is more than 10 years ago, which was most of Suri’s childhood. The reasons for their separation are complex, but it appears to be rooted in the circumstances that led to Cruise and Holmes’ divorce.
Katie Holmes’ decision to part ways with Cruise in 2012 was allegedly a result of Scientology, to which Cruise was very much devoted. As per The Mercury News, Anthony Ortega, a journalist who has been covering Scientology, has claimed that Holmes understood that Suri’s indoctrination in Scientology would start after her 6th birthday.
It is not surprising that Holmes filed for divorce at that time. The divorce process was rather swift, and its settlement took only 11 days. Cruise was granted visitation rights. However, in a 2013 deposition for a defamation lawsuit, Cruise claimed he spent just 10 days with Suri between June and Thanksgiving in 2012 (according to The Mercury News).
Tom Cruise’s absence in key events in Suri’s life, such as her graduation from high school, reinforces the notion of their broken relationship. According to Page Six, Cruise was instead seen at Taylor Swift’s concert, which further paints the picture that he no longer worries about his relationship with his daughter.
