Even After Playing Wolverine 10 Times, Hugh Jackman Still Can’t Beat Ryan Reynolds in 1 Race the Deadpool Star is Winning
- Ryan Reynolds plans to write a non-Marvel project featuring himself and Hugh Jackman, directed by Shawn Levy.
- The project will mark Reynolds' 4th collaboration with Levy and Jackman's 3rd.
- Levy leaves possibilities of directing future Marvel movies, though he is busy with his next immediate projects.
There are very few on-screen characters and roles that become synonymous with certain actors, and Hugh Jackman has been one of them. Playing Wolverine for over two decades, it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role of the fan-favorite mutant.
However, unlike Jackman, who has played Wolverine in 10 films so far, Ryan Reynolds has also etched his name as the face of Deadpool within his 8 years of tenure at Marvel. And moreover, he is on his way to beat Jackman in one more race after their collaboration in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy Might Unite Again
Deadpool & Wolverine has rewritten the history of the superhero genre by becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. The movie has collected over $1.3 billion worldwide (as per Box Office Mojo) and has once again reignited the hype for the MCU, which has been seemingly going through a superhero fatigue phase.
The movie featured Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine after 7 years since Logan, Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool, along with a huge star cast of villains and multiple cameos. With such a grand story and star cast who were reprising their iconic roles, it was easy for the movie to go south.
However, director Shawn Levy has successfully managed to give justice to each character, and it won’t be surprising to imagine that studios will be willing to team up the director with his actors once again. According to Variety, Reynolds is eyeing another collaboration with Levy, which will include Jackman as well.
In an interview on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Reynolds said,
I’m spending the year writing. I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.
Although the details of the story are still a secret, the project will mark Reynolds and Levy’s fourth collaboration together. The previous ones were The Free Guy, The Adam Project, and Deadpool 3. However, Jackman is slightly lagging behind Reynolds in this race as this will be his third proper collaboration with Levy.
Jackman and Levy previously worked on Real Steel and Deadpool 3. He also had an uncredited cameo role in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and a voice cameo in Free Guy. However, besides their common collaboration in Deadpool 3, Levy’s films with Reynolds have been bigger hits than Real Steel with Jackman.
Now, after Deadpool 3, audiences will definitely be willing to see the trio again in action. However, it is still unclear which studio will be producing the movie, and since it won’t be a Marvel movie, it will be interesting to see how Reynolds’ writing can break the mold of Deadpool & Wolverine expectations.
Shawn Levy’s Future in Marvel
After the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios and Disney have been eyeing Shawn Levy for his future role in the MCU. In an interview with Variety, Levy was asked about directing any future Marvel movie, to which he replied,
I don’t know what form my Marvel future will take, but I’m very confident Marvel and I aren’t done with each other.
This definitely leaves many possibilities for Levy’s return to Marvel. At one point, he was also rumored to be directing Avengers 5 before the role was finally given to the Russo brothers. As of now, most of the MCU movies and shows up till Avengers: Secret Wars have confirmed directors. So, Levy might need to wait some more years to make his comeback.
Levy is currently working on an untitled Star Wars movie that is rumored to be a standalone story. Apart from that, he is also involved in the production of the final season of Stranger Things and will most probably be directing some episodes as well.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be available to stream on Disney+ from November 12, 2024.
