Pixar tried to take on laws of Chemistry by showcasing love affair between Fire and Water in Elemental – and they fell flat – both figuratively and financially.

Fire, Water, Land, and Air residents live in a city, named Element, and the story zooms in on a fiery young woman, Ember Lumen. Ember has never had any connection with non-fire elements because her father immigrated to the new place – Element City – and his family faced prejudice, as a result. But things take a turn when Ember meets Wade Ripple – a careless and chill guy – who romantically sprinkles on her life. A true watershed moment!

What starts as a rough early interaction – as one should expect if they believe the laws of science – turns into a feel-good plot that tries to convey a message of loving and accepting everyone around us without any biases in real life. The idea to use elements as metaphors for human beings and their issues around meeting new people and widening their boundaries is cute; alas that’s just how far it went and the Disney-Pixar film’s animated take failed to ruffle feathers in a positive way.

Pixar Movie Elemental Evaporates at the Box Office

The meeting of Ember Lumen and Wade Ripple – played by Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie respectively – has so far made little mark on the box office. The movie was released on June 16 in the US and has evaporated from the scene swiftly, managing to garner a record-breaking low of $29.6 million.

This means Elemental is now officially Pixar‘s second-worst movie of all time when its success is strictly measured by the box office collection. Toy Story (1995) still holds the summit position in terms of the worst opening weekend for the studio.

The Hollywood reporter did mention an encouraging instance for Pixar chiefs, pointing toward the success of their own production Ratatouille despite its slow opening. A French chef and a rat with ambitions and skills in cooking manage to attract viewers to the Theatres, eventually taking the earning of the 2007 released film to $623 million at the worldwide box office.

Whether Elemental manages to follow Ratatouille’s path remains to be seen. But at least Pixar can find comfort in the fact that they’ve still managed to outperform The Flash.

James Gunn’s The Flash Left Behind by Pixar’s Second-Worst Movie

While the romantic interaction of Fire and Water in the Element City didn’t manage to spark any significant reaction on Elemental‘s collection, it still managed to outrun James Gunn‘s The Flash – ironic considering that’s literally his only ability – at the global box office.

DC Studios’ decision to give the character of The Flash, played by Ezra Miller, its own dedicated story has proven to be an absolute disaster. The critics found little substance in The Flash‘s quest to travel back in time, and the reactions aptly reflected at the box office.

So much so that it has now created uncertainty over the franchise’s future.
