Even Tom Cruise Struggles to Keep a Straight Face on After Listening to Marvel Star Cobie Smulder’s Awful Incident
One of the finest actress in the business, Cobie Smulders, played Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Robin Scherbatsky on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. In addition to these endeavors, she also had the chance to collaborate with legendary actor Tom Cruise on the 2016 film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
The American action-thriller Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was directed by Edward Zwick, who also penned the script with Marshall Herskovitz and Richard Wenk. The film, a follow-up to 2012’s Jack Reacher, garnered mixed reviews from critics and viewers, but both praised the lead actors’ acting and the action scenes. Cobie Smulders had mentioned that she never in her wildest dream thought she would work with Tom Cruise.
Cobie Smulders’ high school memory amuses Tom Cruise
Back in 2016, actress Cobie Smulders appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Tom Cruise, Jude Law, and Catherine Tate when she recalled one of the incidents from her childhood involving her mother. She said asking the guests whether it is just a British thing where they are cruelly honest at times. Cobie Smulders’ mother is British and then she goes on to share the incident,
“I had this one moment with my mother and I was in the 12th grade in, um, in high school, and we put on the production of singing in the rain and instead of giving me a part where I where I spoke, they gave me a part where I sang, which I’m not great at and it wasn’t it wasn’t great it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great and my mom came to our first performance and you know we were all excited I was like flushed and I felt really great and I I did it I nailed it even though it was a challenge for me.”
The actress continued to explain that when she came off stage and was expecting her mother to compliment her, but all she said to her that she was wonderful and that she couldn’t sing a note of it but she still sang it anyway. Smulders said she had eight more shows to go and in her head, she could only think that it was horrible. Her story amused the guests and they started laughing over it and she just said maybe it’s a British mother thing.
Cobie Smulders on sharing screen space with Tom Cruise
The actress, who is admired by thousands of fans across the world, said that starring alongside Tom Cruise was never in her wild action dreams and when she was finalized for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, she thought it was going to be another Tom Cruise movie where she’d be overshadowed by the actor.
She said via USA Today back in 2016, “I thought, ‘This is going to be a Tom Cruise movie’ — I was going to be along for the ride, maybe I’d be able to kick somebody.” But it turns out the actress had an equal part to Cruise in the movie and director Edward Zwick said via USA Today,
“Tom wanted (Smulders) to be toe-to-toe, not just running, but also in making decisions in the film. She’s his peer.” The actress who had appeared as Maria Hill in the MCU said starring in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was a level-up that caused her to fracture her knee. Cobie Smulders noted that it was a stupid accident but she‘ll work hard. At the same time, she thought that it was the last time she would be offered a movie, as she noted that she is very pessimistic about the way she works in the industry but she is now known as one of the favorite characters from the MCU.

During an interview, the Canadian actress who was one of the unknown cast members on How I Met Your Mother in which she starred as Robin Scherbatsky, pointed out,
“I don’t know how I got so lucky to move from one genre to the next. For some reason, I’m fooling people into thinking I’m much stronger than I really am. I wish I could muster that strength in my personal life, like when I fall and trip in my apartment.”
In one of her other interviews via ET Online, the actress recalled, “When I got off of the show, I knew I wanted to do something different. I knew I wanted to focus on films, because I didn’t want to be contractually held to something for many years. I wanted to keep bouncing around and try new characters and really just challenge myself. But I never thought of, like, ‘My goal is an action movie with Tom Cruise.'”
Cobie Smulders plays Major Susan Turner, a U.S. Army officer in the movie who is famed for selling government secrets and must go on the run with Tom Cruise’s character.
