“Everything we shot is completely practical”: Mission Impossible 7 Director Confirms Tom Cruise Movie Switching Over from CGI
The cast and crew of Tom Cruise’s upcoming, eagerly anticipated film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One are aware that the stakes are extremely high for them. New behind-the-scenes videos that show how the cast and crew captured the chaos of the movie on the streets of Rome have been released in advance of the film’s July release.
The seventh entry in the Mission Impossible series, which is also the first of the two-party story, was co-written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The pandemic caused some production delays for the Mission: Impossible Fallout sequel, but they were eventually able to finish the movie in September 2021.

Christopher McQuarrie explains the intent of filming in Rome
During a recent interview, co-writer and director, Christopher McQuarrie shared the reason why they filmed the car chase scene featured in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in Rome. He said they wanted, “something with a lot more ambition and unpredictably that we haven’t had in previous chases”.
McQuarrie further added, “Everything we shot is completely practical. We let the city tell us the kind of chase it was going to be. Traffic in the city is notorious and the cobblestone streets make all of the driving unpredictable.” The director reveals that during the car chase, the most interesting thing that the audience would get to see is how Tom Cruise and the new addition to the franchise, Haley Atwell, are handcuffed together.
The Second Unit Director and Stunt Coordinator Wade Eastwood shared that the actor had driven a one-handed car and it was for real, no cheating it. The actress also chimed in to mention, “Tom driving and drifting one-handed through the streets of Rome, that was a day that I will never forget.” The statements from the director and the stunt coordinator point out that maybe the makers did not opt for any CGIs in the movie which is going to be very fascinating for the audience to witness.
Christopher McQuarrie goes on to mention why stunts were difficult to shoot
McQuarrie went on to explain that because of the cobblestones in the streets of Rome, they faced challenges with shooting the stunts where every time they tried to drift and thought they were going in one direction, the stones would appear as a blockage. The car chase scene will feature Tom Cruise and Atwell ditching their BMW for a custom-built Fiat 500 which Eastwood said, “You could barely control the car. It was treacherous.”
The director further noted, “I don’t think we could have made a sequence that was more difficult to shoot than if I had gone out of my way to do it. It has really amazing results.” Tom Cruise also drives a motorcycle off a cliff in the new movie and dangles from the side of a moving train.
