Frasier Season 2: Kelsey Grammer Hints Major Update
- Things are bound to get harder for Frasier as an old flame from his past makes a comeback in the latest season.
- Given the territorial differences between Frasier and Roz Doyle, the showrunners wanted to find a concrete reason to have Doyle come to Boston.
- FRIENDS actress Lisa Kudrow has revealed on various occasions how she was let go from Frasier after being given the role of Roz Doyle.
When Frasier first aired back in 1993, it was considered to be a pathbreaking show. A psychiatrist going on to become a radio jockey solving people’s problems? Seemed like a pretty novel concept back then.
Nevertheless, we can’t argue with the relevancy of the show since the show made a smashing return about two decades after it first aired with Kelsey Grammar reprising his titular role. The reboot aired in 2023 with more seasons to follow quite soon.
What’s next for Frasier in season 2?
There’s a lot Dr. Frasier Crane has achieved in life. From being a successful psychiatrist and a talk show host to being rich and a published author, he has dipped his toes in various fields only to find success at the other end. In the Frasier reboot, we see the titular character embark on the third act of his life as he strives to mend things with his son after his own father dies tragically.
Frasier takes up a professorship at Harvard University in the Psychology department and moves in with his son Frederick. What follows is a hilarious turn of events as the father-son duo struggles to navigate the nuances of their relationship. At the same time, things are bound to get harder as an old flame from Frasier’s past makes a comeback in the latest season.
Peri Gilpin, who plays Roz Doyle, is set to reprise her role in season 2. Doyle was the producer Frasier worked with while he had his own talk show. Given the territorial differences between Frasier and Doyle, the showrunners wanted to find a concrete reason to have Doyle come to Boston. About their relationship, Kelsey Grammar told TVLine,
(We) reacquaint ourselves with what that was, physically and emotionally, and go from there back to Boston with Roz, to give her a new life.
Gilpin explained further that her character’s daughter goes to grad school in Rhode Island which makes her visit her old friend in Boston. Things seem to be getting heated between Frasier and Doyle as the previews and their comments in the interview point to them embarking on a romantic relationship. Ever since the days they worked together, there was something more to their equation and now it’s entirely possible that they actually explore that arc.
Lisa Kudrow was set to play Roz before Peri Gilpin
FRIENDS actress Lisa Kudrow has revealed on various occasions how she was let go from Frasier after being given the role of Roz Doyle. Kudrow is known for playing Phoebe Buffay on the hit sitcom for ten years. People loved her acting so much that they thought that’s how the actress is in real life. However, Grammar thought it necessary to set the record straight as he explained why Gilpin bagged the role over Kudrow on The Daily Beast,
Lisa was fantastic in that other show (Friends). I remember shooting pool with Matthew Perry at my house when they announced that they were going to actually pick that show up. It was just like a week or two before we started. So that was what she was meant to do. And they were able to write to her particular set of skills. I mean, she’s a little bit quirky and unpredictable. We needed somebody on a little more solid ground. Frasier needed a guide, rather than someone that was as crazy as he was.
While Kudrow was disheartened after losing the role in Frasier, she was glad that she had other things in store for her. CBS picked up the FRIENDS pilot that eventually turned the actress’s life around. Phoebe remains one of the most loved characters on television, all thanks to Kudrow’s brilliant portrayal.
Frasier is streaming on Paramount+.
