The showrunners of HBO’s hit Game of Thrones recently disclosed the original plan for the project’s last two seasons, and interestingly, they wanted to conclude it with a trilogy.
Game of Thrones ran for successful eight seasons, but what if we tell you this wasn’t the plan at all? Yes, the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently shared that they were planning to make a trilogy for the last two seasons. Their idea included a theatrical release rather than making an extended TV series, but the network executives had no interest in the trilogy.
Game of Thrones Showrunners Reveal Their Initial Plan For Last Two Season Was a Trilogy
If the network executives had shown interest in making a trilogy for the final two seasons of Game of Thrones, we could have watched it in theatres. However, fate had something else in mind, and fans ended up witnessing a total of eight seasons on HBO. It was first revealed in 2020, by George R.R. Martin, the writer of A Song of Ice & Fire, that the original plan was to conclude the series with a trilogy.

Benioff shared that network executives had no interest in the trilogy, and recalled being reminded that HBO stands for “Home Box Office” not “Away Box Office.” The showrunners also expressed disappointment with Time Warner’s then-owners AT&T, as they wanted to shoot the series vertically for a better view on phones. The duo also mentioned the lack of flexibility, and since they couldn’t craft the project according to their vision and ideas, the showrunners left HBO after the series concluded and started working on Netflix’s project.
Fans Continue To Criticize The Conclusion of Game of Thrones
Before the duo started working on Netflix’s project, they made sure to conclude the HBO series. However, the last season of Game of Thrones wasn’t well received by fans, and they took no time to criticize it. Many viewers were unhappy with the narrative being rushed and the finale was filled with too many plots. What’s even more sad is many viewers are still slamming the last seasons.

Season 1-6 masterpieces after they ran out of the source material it was a mess. HBO wanted them to go for 14 seasons. But the creators wanted to go off and do Star Wars so they rushed the end smh.

Even one of the cast members and actor Conleth Hill, who was a key figure in Game of Thrones expressed frustration with the last seasons. In an interview with The Times, Hill said:
“I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been. I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another.”
The actor openly shared his disappointment, and revealed that he felt the last series was “rushed”. As mentioned by the showrunners in the recent profile, they found a stable environment while working for Netflix, which wasn’t the case with HBO.
Game of Thrones is streaming on Max.
