Recently on The Kardashians, Kim Kardashian shared with Khloe Kardashian and Kendall Jenner that she was affected by the backlash she got for her advice to women in business on the Variety Interview in March. At the time, people slammed her comments saying it was coming from her privileged position. She shared how blindsided she got due to the criticism she faced for the soundbite. Why did Kim Kardashian Face a Backlash?
In an Interview on Variety in March, Kim Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian appeared together and discussed their life and business. A question asked by the interviewer Elizabeth Wagmeister was “What would be your advice to Women in Business?”. Both the Kardashian sisters gave their own words of advice. However, the Skims founder’s take on the question did not sit right with the viewers. She stated at the time was,
“I have the best advice for women in business, get your f–king ass up and work. Success is never easy, so if you put in the work, you will see results.”
Following the interview which triggered many, the viewers slammed Kim K with various negative comments. Some criticized her saying that her “ privilege afforded her the opportunities she’s been given”. And since then Kim K has apologized and explained herself on various occasions.
Kim Kardashian’s Response to the Backlash on her Advice
After she was flooded with criticism and backlash, Kim K appeared on Good Morning America and apologize saying,
“I came off of the notion and the question right before, which was ‘after 20 years of being in the business, you’re famous for being famous’ and my whole tone and attitude changed with the previous question that went into that question about what advice would you give to women,” explaining that the statement was taken out of context.
Once again on a recent episode of The Kardashians, the Skims founder discussed the criticism with Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner saying that she was aware of her privilege and also why people did not like what she had said in the interview. She explained herself saying, at one point in their life, she had seen her mother struggle to take care of their family all by herself before their success. She said,
“Mom really started her career and making money at 50,” Kim continued, “So, it’s like growing up and seeing her hustle and seeing her get up every day with all these kids … that she had to take care of, I saw her work her ass off and figure it out … and that really inspired me to work.” Suggesting that her advice came from the inspiration she got while watching her mom work.
