Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian

Giancarlo Esposito has been part of The Mandalorian since the beginning. The actor served as the primary antagonist, portraying the villain Moff Gideon in the first three seasons of the series.  Gideon has been the main enemy of The Mandalorian since season one, whether it be through his pursuit of Grogu or his acts against the Mandalorian people.

Esposito’s character was killed off in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 8 when an explosion enveloped him during the decisive conflict between the Mandalorians and Gideon’s Imperial soldiers in the Mines of Mandalore.

During an interview, the 65-year-old actor confirmed he would love to return to the series and reprise his Moff Gideon role. He also confessed to having no hard feelings if the creative team didn’t include him in the next season

The Better Call Saul star said,

“Jon Favreau is a friend and I tespect his creativity and his reinvention of this particular show, coupled with Dave Filoni, who I think is a genius. Dave especially, is a kid in a man’s body with a genius brain. So I hope the show goes on and I have no feelings about whether it will or won’t with me included.”

The Malcolm X actor added his opinion about the return of Gideon and said that the door is still wide open for a potential return but it eventually depends on the creators.

Esposito added,

“My ego says that they must have Moff Gideon, but I also want to serve the project. I would love to come back and it’s a special show because of the iconic mythology it deals with. But if they see fit that Moff should be gone, then that’s the truth. Anything can happen, and I certainly don’t want to be attached to the outcome but I would love to come back and taunt Baby Yoda a little more.”

Although there are no reports from the creators of The Mandalorian to bring back Giancarlo Esposito, there is a possibility the character might return even after his death in season 3.

The end of Season 3 of Din Djarin’s The Mandalorian saw the protagonist and Grogu moving into a new home on Nevarro while they wait for their next task. People were let down by the end of Season 3, and the death of Giancarlo Esposito made it even worse. Now fans are waiting for Season 4, and it doesn’t seem to be making an appearance on Disney+ anytime soon.

The Mandalorian‘s first two seasons didn’t have much of a gap between them. But Season 3 and Season 4 are a whole different story. The last season ended neatly leaving no opportunity to analyze storylines or plot points that could play a part in Season 4. It has led to the curiosity of fans as they wait for the next season of the Star Wars series.

The writers’ strike that is still in effect may cause Season 4 production to begin later than originally planned, possibly in early 2024, and its premiere to be postponed till 2025.

The first three seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney+
