Gillian Anderson joins the cast of Tron: Ares alongside Jared Leto

The Crown actress Gillian Anderson was recently announced as a new addition to Tron: Ares, the third feature in the Tron franchise. The movie is a science fiction series that is a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Morbius actor Jared Leto not only stars in the movie but also serves as the producer alongside Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.

According to Deadline, Gillian Anderson is the latest addition to the ensemble cast including Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardin, and Jodie Turner-Smith. The character details of Anderson are kept under wraps for now.  Describing about Leto’s character, Deadline reports via JoBio,

“A fictional character who crosses over from the world of video games to planet Earth.”

The first Tron was released in 1982 with Jeff Bridges starring as Kevin Flynn; a computer programmer who is transported into the digital world of computers. Flynn must interact with various programs and navigate the unique environment to stop the oppressive system and master control of the program.

Tron: Legacy was released in 2010 where Kevin Flynn’s son Sam played by Garrett Hedlund also enters the same game to find his father. He comes across various obstacles within the evolved digital universe. The movies didn’t perform the way the makers expected at the box office but eventually found its way into the list of cult classics.

Jared Leto’s Tron 3 was delayed due to WGA & SAG-AFTRA strikes

According to Collider, the movie Tron 3 was expected to start filming in August 2023 however the WGA and SAG- AFTRA’s strike halted their project. The director said at the time,

“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron:Ares. Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifth people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.”

The director recently shared a picture from the set on his social media, tagging Jared Leto in the image confirming the beginning of the filming along with Leto’s casting. There is not much that one can make out with the pictures shared but eagle-eyed fans noted, that, unlike the previous Tron movies which were primarily in blue light, Tron 3 showcases intense red lights.

The original stars of the movie Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan in their conversation with ComicBook.com, the stars shared that they look forward to the upcoming movie,

“I wish them luck. I think it’s high time they did it. It’s been a long time since Legacy already. And I think it’s a re-imagining of it, a reboot. It needs that and it needs it for a younger. This generation. We did it for ours, but they need it.”

Tron: Legacy’s director Joseph Kosinski had shared via ComicBook that he was looking forward to making a sequel to Tron: Legacy but Disney’s investment towards making Marvel and Star Wars projects resulted in the movie being scrapped.
