“Girls are into me”: Truth About Aubrey Plaza’s Sexuality Has Been Clear as the Day, For Years Now
- Aubrey Plaza's Rio and Kathryn Hahn's Agatha kissed in an episode of Agatha All Along.
- Plaza has not exactly been secretive about her sexuality all these years.
- The Legion actress has played a gay character in a movie much before she starred as Rio.
Marvel has made history recently by including the franchise’s first major lesbian kiss between Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza in Disney+’s WandaVision spin-off series, Agatha All Along. This has started a conversation about Plaza’s sexuality as more and more people wonder if the actress is gay.
From queer actors to queer characters, Agatha All Along has an exceptional amount of LGBTQ+ representation. However, the one interaction that caught many off-guard was the kiss between exes Agatha (Hahn) and Rio (Plaza). Contrary to popular belief, the Black Bear actress has been open about her sexuality for quite some time now.
Aubrey Plaza’s Sexuality Has Never Been a Secret
Aubrey Plaza stepped into the entertainment industry as an improv performer in 2004. Her feature film debut came in 2009. She also had her breakthrough that same year, but it was through the mockumentary sitcom Parks and Recreation in which she portrayed April Ludgate.
In recent years, Plaza has gained even more recognition for some of the most recent performances. These in her roles in HBO’s anthology series, The White Lotus, the independent film, Emily the Criminal, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, and of course, Marvel’s Agatha All Along.
The last of these has been causing quite a stir lately. In the seventh episode of the show, Rio is revealed to be the embodiment of Death at the end of the series which climaxes with Agatha and Rio kissing. As far as the Legion actress’ sexuality is concerned, she got candid about it in an interview with The Advocate.
I know I have an androgynous thing going on, and there’s something masculine about my energy. Girls are into me — that’s no secret. Hey, I’m into them too. I fall in love with girls and guys. I can’t help it.
So, it is not really news that Plaza is into girls considering that she came clean about it in this interview in 2016. Considering heterosexual actors often play queer characters, it might have come as a surprise to many that Plaza is, in fact, not straight.
Has Aubrey Plaza Played Any Queer Characters Before?
Plaza has been openly queer in real life as well as in the Marvel series. This might make some wonder if she has ever played any other queer characters. Well, the answer is yes. She starred as Kelly, Natasha Lyonne’s character’s gay trainer in the 2015 dark comedy, Addicted to Fresno.
In the interview with The Advocate, she reflected on what it was like for her to portray Kelly and also admitted that she had a crush on Lyonne in real life.
It was less about pretending to be a lesbian and more about portraying a human being with a massive crush on Natasha Lyonne’s character. Natasha’s a friend, and she called me up, like, ‘Do you want to come do a movie and make out with me?’ I have a major crush on her in real life, so it was fun.
Elsewhere in the interview, she stated that she grew up in an open-minded family, and being a part of a community theater with a welcoming gay community also helped. She was obsessed with Judy Garland while growing up, and she was in awe of how important Garland was to the queer community. She also said that people idolizing her as a queer idol made sense to her. In fact, she considered it a compliment to have her own gay following.
