“Great message, but not great drama”: Marvel Finally Explains Confusing Ending of Samuel L Jackson’s ‘Secret Invasion’
Marvel is expanding the cinematic universe to shows and television mini-series. The latest installment of this expansion, and the first in MCU’s Phase 5 concluded just recently. Secret Invasion is about extraterrestrial shape-shifting Skrulls, which have invaded Earth and are a threat to humanity. This exciting premise kept viewers hooked throughout the six-episode ride. However, the way the season ended sparked controversy and most of all confusion among fans. And wasn’t applauded by the critics either. The show director Ali Selim was quick to defend the ending.
Secret Invasion Director Explains The Ending
When President Ritson declares war on Skrulls in the series finale, and humans and Skrulls are killed alike, a lot of questions arise in viewers’ minds but are left unanswered. Secret Invasion received the lowest Rotten Tomato rating in franchise history and fans were left disappointed with the ambiguous ending, claiming that it didn’t resolve the show’s premise. But director Ali Selim was shocked by such a reception. And explained that resolving the whole drama for Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson could not have been good for the show’s dramatics.
“Well, I think that Ritson could say, ‘The Skrulls are welcome here,’ which is a great message, but not great drama. Nick Fury has to have some opposition as we leave the series. Even though he’s come to terms with it, I don’t know that it’s realistic to think that everybody has come to terms with it.
The Marvel director said that the ending was intended to give viewers an idea that “this battle could go on”.
Future of Secret Invasion Storyline
As director Selim continued to build up on how ending the show in a conflict is imperative to the future prospects of the storyline. He said it is possible that we could see G’iah, played by Emilia Clark, and Sonya Falsworth, played by Olivia Colman, saving the day. The reconciliation of these two characters, in the end, is promising for further development of the show. As Selim pointed out:
“I think it’s important to show that a sense of other can create a sense of conflict. The choice was: Do we want a Pollyanna ending, or do we want an ending with some real guts to it? The idea is that this battle could go on. But Sonya and G’iah reconcile at the end, and maybe they’re going to fix it. Maybe these two strong, beautiful women are going to come in and fix it.”
As Phase 5 of the MCU has begun, fans gear up for more twists and turns it will be interesting to discover how the plot nuances and unresolved ending of Secret Invasion come together in further projects. Will President Ritson reveal himself to be the villain? Will Skrulls take over Earth? Only time and new projects will tell.
