Hayao Miyazaki is a renowned anime creator of all time. He announced back in 2017 that he was coming out of retirement to direct one last film. The film named Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka (How Do You Live?) was recently released in Japan. It is set to release in North America under the title, The Boy and the Heron.

Miyazaki has been associated with Studio Ghibli for a long time. The animation house has produced some of the best films, and recently released the first promotional artwork for The Boy and the Heron. The sketch posted on the animation house’s official Twitter account depicts a young man sketched out alone at a desk in a light color that appears to be unfinished. The link to the post includes the singer Kenshi Yonezu’s song Chikyugi (Globe), which serves as the film’s theme song.

Hayao Miyazaki’s film came out in Japan on July 14. The last film by the director, followed a weird marketing strategy. Studio Ghibli didn’t release any promotional content for the film. 

The movie’s distributor GKIDS announced that they had acquired the North American rights and will be releasing Hayao Miyazaki’s film this year under the title The Boy and the Heron.

Hayao Miyazaki, a renowned filmmaker, came out of retirement ten years after The Wind Rises to make one final film. The film The Boy and the Heron revolves around a little kid named Mahito who must leave his community after losing his mother in a World War II air raid.

Mahito, who is now residing with his father, finally receives a weird visit from a talking heron who informs him that his mother is still alive and leads him on a fantastical quest to locate her.

The film is titled Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka. In English, that translates to How Do You Live? has already hit theaters in Japan. The name comes from a 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino. The film is inspired by the novel as well as by Miyazaki’s childhood. The Spirited Away director has helmed 12 feature films throughout his career.

The Boy and the Heron premiered in Japan on July 14, 2023, and will release in North America later in 2023.
