“He ain’t gonna find that shield”: X-Men ’97 Voice Actor Believes Captain America vs Rogue Moment Could Lead to a X-Men vs Avengers Storyline in Marvel Universe
The much-appreciated Disney+ series X-Men ’97 has successfully reignited the love for the mutant heroes. The series is a continuation of the original X-Men: The Animated Series from 1997. It picks up after the conclusion of the original series and shows X-Men’s new challenges.
X-Men ’97 is not directly connected to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline. However, the series has been teasing viewers for potential crossovers with the MCU with its hints and cameos. The appearance of Spider-Man and inclusion of villains like Doctor Doom and Baron Zemo have opened the door to several possibilities.
The voice actor of Professor X in X-Men ’97, Ross Marquand, has set a record for portraying the most number of characters in the MCU. He recently talked about an episode from the series where Rogue bumps into Captain America and throws his shield.
Does Captain America vs. Rogue in X-Men ‘97 Hints at a Bigger Picture?
In the 7th episode of X-Men ’97, viewers saw an important moment that hints towards a potential Avengers vs. X-Men storyline. The episode shows Rogue in a revengeful mood after the death of Gambit and her encounter with Captain America.
During their confrontation, Rogue throws Captain America’s shield miles away. In an interview with Comicbook.com Ross Marquand talked about the scene, hinting at the possibility of an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline. He said,
“You saw what happened in the last episode [with] Rogue and Captain America. There’s a real chance that that could happen. He can’t fly. Captain can’t fly. She threw that in the side of a snowy mountain. I’m sure it’s lodged in there 50 feet deep. He ain’t gonna find that shield. It’s not like Mjolnir where you can just like pull it back, it’s stuck in that thing. He’s gonna be pissed at Rogue for a while.”
In the 2012-released storyline of Avengers vs. X-Men, both teams fought each other over the Phoenix Force. Although the possibility of an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline in the MCU is still completely speculative, Marquand’s comments definitely leave space for speculation.
How The Avengers and X-Men Crossover Might Take Place
Rogue’s encounter with Captain America in X-Men ’97 provided a glimpse of how challenging it will be for the Avengers if they ever face the mutant team. As Marquand pointed out, Rogue’s ability to easily overpower Captain America shows how the X-Men have the potential to overpower the Avengers.
Rogue destroying a secret US military base that was meant to contain The Hulk also shows how powerful she is. Moreover, X-Men ’97 also shows how Rogue and Cyclops are not happy with the way mutants are being treated, and how Captain America’s approach towards them was not welcome.
