“He was too tired”: Ryan Coogler Details His Last Call With Chadwick Boseman Before His Death Due to Cancer
Amid the ongoing promotions for the upcoming Black Panther sequel, director Ryan Coogler has been sharing lots of exclusive information regarding the movie and its production process. And not only Coogler, but the cast have been busy with the promotions just the same.
It was revealed that the cast and the director all went to the Chadwick Boseman’s graveyard to get blessings from the late actor. Coogler recently revealed that the Black Panther actor proceeded without reading the script for Black Panther 2. And when asked for the reason behind it the actor reportedly replied that it was better for him to read the script later.
Ryan Coogler Reveals Some Behind the scenes Story of Black Panther 2
Director of Marvel’s Black Panther, Ryan Coogler has shared some information on what went behind the whole production process of Black Panther 2. According to Coogler, he started working on the sequel’s script right after the release of Black Panther. Further he shared he had wanted to introduce a new character in the sequel, so he researched various stories to find one. Ultimately he decided on Namor the Sub-Mariner.
Coogler then shared that he had been excited to share the script with Chadwick Boseman. Surprisingly for the director, the God of Egypt star denied reading the script when it was offered to him. According to Coogler, Boseman responded with,“it’s better if [he] can read it later.” Later it was discovered that the actor had been simply tired and hence this was his response.

What Really made Late Chadwick Boseman unwilling to Read script?
According to Ryan Coogler, at the time of script reading, Boseman was just simply tired. But here is how it all went down behind the scenes. As Coogler recounts in the Official Black Panther Podcast, he had called up the Marshall actor to read the finished script of the sequel. The director had wanted to get some input from the late actor before the script was sent to the studio. Black Panther director shared that he was pretty sure that the actor had been tired just from his voice on the other side. Coogler recounts saying,
“He was tired, bro. I could tell he was tired.” He further stated, “And I could tell he was laying down. We were talking. And Simone [Boseman] was with him.”

During the phone conversation, the director recalls hearing Boseman ask his wife to leave the room. This was because the God of Egypt actor did not want any confidential information to leak out. As certain information leak could have violated NDA rules.
Afterwards the late actor had expressed he did not want to read the script. And later Coogler came to know that Boseman had been too tired to read anything. Another point was that, the Marshall actor also expressed that he did not want to get in the way of the studio’s notes on the script.
