Symbolizing acceptance, inclusion, and love’s core essence, the series Schitt’s Creek swiftly became a fan favorite. Created by Canadian father-son duo Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy, the comedy show proved to everyone how the genre can work with clean jokes and narratives without putting any one community or section of people down. In fact, Schitt’s Creek helped many people from the LGBTQ+ community to accept their truths and not hide from the world anymore.

The show changed the way the masses view comedy shows on streaming platforms and rallied behind its perpetual continuance. However, Schitt’s Creek came to an end after six amazing seasons that showcased the downfall of the Rose family with their loss of fortune and subsequent way back to wealth and societal standing. Was Schitt’s Creek cancelled or did the show end of its own accord? Let’s find out.

Why did Schitt’s Creek end?

When Netflix gained the rights to stream the series on the platform, Schitt’s Creek had already garnered popular support. Though people were skeptical at first, the viewership of the show steadily rose as fans couldn’t get enough of the adventures of the Rose family. Moreover, the budding romances and the character arcs that populated the overall narrative tugged at the viewers’ heartstrings constantly.

The reason why Schitt’s Creek ended after 6 seasons was because the makers of the show, Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy, who also play Johnny Rose and David Rose on the show respectively, had already decided how to conclude the story.

Moreover, the Levys wanted to end the show on a high rather than wrap it up in the face of dwindling viewership. Schitt’s Creek was at its peak when it concluded and that shows how strategic that decision was. Daniel Levy was averse to letting the story suffer just to continue for a few more seasons. He told Variety,

I at no point wanted to compromise on quality or storytelling. It just didn’t feel like it was worth the risk to take it any further. The goal was at the end of this show, this family will realize the value of love. Money can temporarily bandage a lot of things. But they would never be able to buy the kind of closeness that they have by the end of the series.

Despite the massive fandom and popularity of the series, the narrative was already set and the course of the story was decided. They had a vision in mind as to how the characters would grow up and learn the ways of life in this terrible situation. So when that arc was complete, there was nothing left but to give the show a satisfactory climax.

As Levy stated above, the goal of the story was met by the end of Schitt’s Creek – the Rose family learned how to stop relying on money for their fate and took charge of their destiny. Johnny Rose builds another business from scratch, Moira Rose finds newfound fame as an actress, David Rose finally embarks on a business venture which he plans and prepares on his own and finds love in Patrick, whereas Alexis Rose eventually grows out of her pampered kid phase and makes something of herself in the field of Public Relations.

Towards the end of Schitt’s Creek, the stark difference in how they began and where they ended is pretty evident. What’s more, the climax of the show seems as close to reality as we can imagine since not everyone gets the picture-perfect happy ending. While David and Patrick decide to stay back and focus on their artisanal business, Alexis and their parents fly out to their respective locations to start afresh.

The finale of the series came in 2020 when the world was grappling with the deadly pandemic and people felt completely devoid of hope and sentiment. Looking at Schitt’s Creek, viewers felt the glimmer of hope light up again as they capped the show with emotional moments of the family finally coming together to celebrate David and Patrick’s dreamy wedding.
