Words from E. L. James’s erotic romance novel Fifty Shades Of Grey took the form of a live-action movie for the first time in 2015 and made millions envious of the steaming romance between Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

The role of businessman Christian Grey, who stretches the boundaries of pain and pleasure with college senior Anastasia is Dornan’s most popular work and it didn’t stop at just one movie. The Northern Irishman was handed the opportunity to reprise his role and chemistry with the beautiful Johnson two more times.

The trilogy managed a combined total of north of a $1 billion collection at the box office and overall turned out to be a great experience for Dornan in more than one way. Many actors dream of leading such an interesting and successful franchise, but things weren’t as easy and smooth for the star as it was for the rich Grey in the storylines of the Fifty Shades franchise.

Why Fifty Shades of Grey’s Jamie Dornan Was Jealous of Robert Pattinson

Jamie Dornan‘s role is certainly a subject of envy for many, but he isn’t the first actor to lead a huge franchise centered around a dominant male (for lack of a better word) and malleable but pretty female.

Robert Pattinson‘s The Twilight Saga carries a similar theme across five movies, as high-school student Bella Swann (Kristen Stewart) ends up being charmed by the mysterious Edward Cullen, who is a vampire. Incidentally, Pattinson and Dornan are friends and used to encounter each other in London during the early days of their careers.

Pattinson became a superstar much earlier than Dornan. While the former’s big success (Twilight) hit the theaters in 2008, the latter had to wait until 2011 for his breakthrough as Sheriff Graham Humbert in the TV series Once Upon a Time.

Reflecting on that period of struggle and the experience of seeing his friend and counterpart hit the foot on the accelerator before him, Dornan said:

“I’ve known Rob forever. He’s a really good friend. I love him, I think he’s one of the most interesting, exciting actors around. I probably at one point was quite jealous of him. Like, early on when we were all friends back in London, and Rob was just like going places and we sort of weren’t. I think he’s amazing, the nicest guy in the world.”

Fortunately for Dornan his appearance on Once Upon a Time opened further doors, eventually leading him to Fifty Shades of Grey. Interestingly, it’s believed that his hit franchise was originally written as Twilight fanfiction. It was originally titled Master of the Universe and published by James under the pen name Snowqueen Icedragon.

Will Jamie Dornan Feature in a Fourth Fifty Shades of Grey Movie

James, 60, published three Fifty Shades of Grey novels in the space of a year (between 2011-12) but took her time with the fourth which was released in 2017.

Meanwhile, on the big screen, we’ve only been blessed with three movies, leaving fans hopeful and at the same time puzzled about the prospect of seeing Dornan and Johnson come together for a fourth time.

However, in an interview with Variety in 2020, the 41-year-old suggested he’s unlikely to do anything similar again. He insisted:

“I’ve never done anything close to since and probably never will again, because it’s kind of its own thing. It’s like we did it; it lived in its own world and it was a very big world and a lot of people cared about it. But it’s kind of like, ‘That was it.'”

Chances of seeing Dornan with Johnson might be slim to none, but fans can catch him alongside Gal Gadot and Alia Bhat in the movie Heart of Stone on Netflix from August 11.
