Apparently, being mean to celebrities on social media without any consequences is the new normal, and Timothée Chalamet happens to be the newest victim of this culture. The take people have is on his looks. Suddenly, people are not as fond of his appearance as they used to be.

Chalamet is unarguably one of the best-looking actors of his generation. For years, his vampire-like looks have made him a sex symbol and fashion icon. More often than not, fans are found discussing just how good-looking he is, and his talent for acting is a cherry on the top. However, that narrative seems to have changed now that he has grown a mustache, and changed his appearance a little.

Celebrities are often held to high and ever-changing beauty standards. What is trendy and beautiful today could be cringe and ugly tomorrow. While this is especially daunting for women, men are also no exception. On one hand, the fans of some male celebrities are dying for their idol to grow a mustache. On the other hand, there are fans of others who criticize even the slightest changes in their appearance.

Not so long ago, Jacob Elordi debuted his long hair and bearded look at the Marrakech Film Festival which seems to be in preparation for the time jump trope of Euphoria Season 3. Even then, people did not seem too impressed, and the same appears to be in Timothée Chalamet‘s case as a fan openly expressed their disapproval of his new look at this year’s Gotham Awards.

Some other fans were quick to jump to his defense and even pointed out how normalized it has become for people to publicly talk negatively about celebrities’ looks.

Chalamet is a man of many talents, but some people seem to have pigeon-holed him to be that same porcelain-skinned, clean-shaved, forlorn Victorian boy with the perfect jawline he was when he first gained recognition in the industry.

In the years since he starred in Call Me by Your Name, he has been taking more and more daring roles. In fact, this new look that he has debuted is for his role as the famous table tennis player and author, Marty Reisman in the Josh Safdie-directed sports film Marty Supreme. If anything, his new look is a symbol of his dedication to his work.

At the mere age of 28, Chalamet has achieved a lot more than an actor his age can imagine. From working with Greta Gerwig in some of the best movies in the history of cinema to leading a blockbuster franchise like Dune, he has come a long way.

At the Gotham Awards this year, he received The Gotham Film & Media Institute’s Visionary Tribute honor for starring as the lead character in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Besides thanking everyone who helped him achieve this feat, he also claimed that doing this role was “the greatest education a young artist could ever receive” (via PEOPLE).

Getting to study and immerse myself in the world of Bob Dylan has been the greatest education a young artist could receive. If you’re already a fan of Bob Dylan, this will make perfect sense to you. And if you’re not familiar with his work, perhaps our film can serve as a humble gateway to one of the great poets and chroniclers of our times.

The movie’s director and co-writer, James Mangold was the one who invited Chalamet to the podium and Oscar Isaac was the one who presented the award to him. Ever the charmer, the actor also credited Isaac as one of his inspirations.

A Complete Unknown will be in theaters on December 25, 2024.
