Anthony Mackie is internationally known for his portrayal of the Marvel superhero Sam Wilson aka Falcon in numerous MCU projects. The most recent of these was the TV miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier featuring his character alongside Sebastian Stan’s MCU character Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier.

Avengers: Endgame’s ending saw Chris Evans’s Captain America retire from his duties as the superhero as he passed on his mantle to Falcon. So, in his next MCU project, Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson will also be shouldering Captain America’s responsibilities like he did in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Although the role has the same name as before, Anthony Mackie has insisted that his Captain America is not the same as the one the audience is used to.

Anthony Mackie Insists His Captain America Is Different

Avengers: Endgame put an end to the legacy of three out of the six original Avengers as Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow sacrificed herself for an infinity stone, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man died in his attempt to stop Thanos and Chris Evans’ Captain America is a little too old to keep saving the world.

In an interview with Yahoo, the Million Dollar Baby actor said:

“With my Cap, he’s not a superhero. He doesn’t have a super serum, so his superpower is his humanity. “I think with him, he has to come to the stage with a very different understanding of what it is to be a good guy, or be a bad guy, and what are the decisions that make you toe that line in the way that you do?”

Mackie went on to say that the new Captain America is going to be a little more compassionate than Evans’ who used to be often blinded by his sense of right or wrong due to his firm stance on only doing the right things no matter what the consequences would be.

Chris Evans spent a decade portraying Captain America which has become one of the most beloved characters of the franchise. On the one hand, Evans misses what he did for so long, on the other hand, he got the chance to step out of the mold and pursue other endeavors.

Although Evans does not plan to return to the role unless it actually makes sense for him to do so, he is grateful for what the role has gotten him. From being praised for his performance as Captain America to forging great friendships with his co-stars, he had the time of his life in the decade that he portrayed the character. His absence might never be fulfilled in the franchise but hopefully, Anthony Mackie will be doing his best to maintain the legacy of Steve Rogers.
