“He’s not big enough to…”: Ricky Gervais’ Scathing Golden Globes Joke on Hollywood’s Greatest Living Director Will Be Hard to Top for Nikki Glaser
- Ricky Gervais has delivered some of the most scathing jokes in the history of Golden Globes.
- He also made a joke at the expense of one of the most esteemed directors in Hollywood.
- The After Life star plans not to return as the host of the Golden Globes after doing it for 5 years.
With the Golden Globes just around the corner, now is a good time to look at one of the most scathing jokes from comedian and actor, Ricky Gervais. Every year, this annual event kicks off the awards season and recognizes some of the best artists and professionals in the industry for their valuable contributions to film and TV.
This year, comedian Nikki Glaser takes the stage as host, promising to liven up the night with her charm and humor. However, it has to be noted that she has big shoes to fill, following the iconic duo, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, solo hosts like Seth Meyers, and of course, Ricky Gervais, who has never been afraid to “go there” even if it is none other than Martin Scorsese.
Ricky Gervais took a dig at Martin Scorsese at the Golden Globes 2020
The Golden Globes is an annual award ceremony that has been held since 1944 and has delivered some of Hollywood’s most memorable moments when it comes to award shows. Although it is doubtful that anything will ever be able to top Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on the stage at the Academy Awards in 2022, some of the jokes made by hosts while hosting these ceremonies have left an indelible mark on the audience.
British comedian Ricky Gervais made many such jokes when he was hosting the Golden Globes in 2020. From calling out those who worked with Harvey Weinstein and never uttered a word about his misconduct to advising winners to avoid making political speeches when they take the stage, The Office star took no prisoners.
Gervais also did not seem to have any qualms about making a joke at the expense of the legendary filmmaker, Martin Scorsese (via caruthersm on YouTube). He said:
Martin Scorsese said the Marvel films remind him of theme parks. I don’t know what he’s doing hanging around theme parks – he’s not big enough to go on the rides.
The comedian also made a couple of jokes pointing at the long runtime of some of Scorsese’s movies. Regarding The Irishman which was nominated in five categories at the ceremony, he said:
In a moment we’re going to see a short clip from The Irishman. It’s 88 minutes long.
To his credit, the Taxi Driver director took all of the jokes in stride and even mouthed, “It’s true” to those with whom he shared the table when Gervais joked that he was too short to go on the rides at theme parks.
Ricky Gervais has asked the Golden Globes not to ask him to host the awards again
The Life’s Too Short star has hosted the Golden Globes five times so far- 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020. He has basically left behind a blueprint for all those who come after him to host the awards and want to ridicule the attendees in the most amicable way possible.
In an interview with LadBible, when asked if he would like to return as a host, Gervais said that he is not completely ruling it out, but he asked the Golden Globes to not ask him again.
It could be the Golden Globes could offer me £10m for 10 minutes work, you know, and I’d be an idiot, I’d be a liar, to say I wouldn’t consider it. But at the moment, given I’ve done it five times, it got better and better for me – I enjoyed them all, but it got better – and I’m planning never to do it again. I’ve asked them not to ask me because I can be persuaded, that’s true. You know, it’s not a principle.
The After Life star has been rather honest regarding how he feels about this whole thing. That said, Nikki Glaser will helm the ceremony this year and she makes history as the first solo woman to host the Golden Globes.
