Even though he wasn’t even there, Tom Cruise attracted a lot of attention at the 2023 Oscars. The Top Gun: Maverick actor’s absence from the Oscars in 2023 will undoubtedly be attributed to the fact that he is already back overseas filming Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part II.

Top Gun received six Oscar nominations at the Oscars in 2023. The nominations for the movie include Best Picture, Film Editing, Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Sound, Visual Effects, and Music (Original Song).

Oscar-winning director, Steven Spielberg reportedly told Tom Cruise at the 2023 Academy Luncheon that he “saved theaters,” despite Top Gun: Maverick being a dark horse contender for best picture. The movie was widely credited with bringing people back to the movies.

Although Cruise received royal treatment at the Academy Luncheon and the PGA Awards, he received jeers at the Golden Globes and the DGA Awards. Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the Oscars ceremony, allegedly joked about Cruise’s infamous intensity and his affiliation with the divisive Church of Scientology. He also revealed that the actor wouldn’t even be attending the event.

Even Tom Cruise is now getting flak from netizens for allegedly missing the Oscars.

Tom Cruise Received Trolls for Skipping The 2023 Oscars

It appears that the actor’s recent absence from the Oscars did not sit well with netizens.

Tom Cruise is currently working on the eighth Mission: Impossible film. Hannah Waddingham, who starred in Ted Lasso, was added to the cast on Friday. Cruise was also nominated as a producer for the best picture award for the movie Top Gun: Maverick, putting him in the running for an Oscar. He shared the nomination with Jerry Bruckheimer, Christopher McQuarrie, and David Ellison. Apart from being a producer, he played a leading role in the $1.43 billion-grossing film.

But on Sunday, the actor’s representatives informed multiple outlets that Cruise wouldn’t be present on the big night due to previous commitments, as he is currently filming Mission Impossible 8. Since he did not attend this year’s Oscars, Tom Cruise became the center of attention on social media.

Netizens began criticizing his choice and labeling him “ridiculously sensitive” as soon as his decision to skip the event became public knowledge on the internet.

Not only Cruise but other well-known figures connected to Top Gun: Maverick are rumored to have skipped the ceremony. It was revealed last week that Lady Gaga, whose song Hold My Hand is one of the movie’s nominees, would be the only Best Original Song nominee who would not perform on the awards show. Gaga did, however, confirm that she would perform at the ceremony at the very last minute.

Jimmy Kimmel Mocked Him for Not Attending Oscars 2023

Jimmy Kimmel mocked Tom Cruise in his opening monologue at the 95th annual awards ceremony on March 12. While discussing Top Gun: Maverick, Kimmel made fun of Cruise for skipping the Oscars this year and even made fun of his Scientology beliefs.

Along with Cruise, Kimmel also criticized James Cameron, the Avatar director, for skipping the event. He sarcastically remarked, “The two guys who insisted we go to the theatre, didn’t come to the theatre.”

Meanwhile, Judd Apatow also made fun of Tom Cruise’s height, antics, and affiliation with the Church of Scientology during his opening monologue at the Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday.

According to reports, the Jerry Maguire actor missed the awards ceremony this year primarily due to his schedule for shooting Mission: Impossible 8. The source also stated that Cruise was “over the moon” after knowing about the nomination for the Top Gun sequel.
