Hideo Kojima’s Stance on Furiosa Doesn’t Change Even After Anya Taylor-Joy Starrer Prequel Struggles Badly With a $33 Million Box Office Weekend
Director George Miller is back with a new Mad Max movie titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The fifth film in the series hit theaters this Memorial Day weekend and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa — a tough warrior woman fighting to survive in a world after a big war.
But the prequel to the critically acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa, isn’t living up to the hype. Even though people were excited to see a younger Imperator Furiosa played by Taylor-Joy, it only made $31-33 million over a four-day Memorial Day weekend. That’s a rough start, especially considering the film’s expensive $168 million price tag.
This falls short of the three-day opening of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015 ($45.4 million). However, Hideo Kojima’s opinion on the movie hasn’t changed even though it didn’t do well at the box office.
Hideo Kojima Stands by Furiosa Regardless of Financial Struggles
Even though Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga isn’t making as much money as expected, one famous fan is still raving about it. Hideo Kojima, the legendary video game director known for his work on the Metal Gear Solid series, has been a vocal supporter of the film.
The Japanese video game designer took to X to express his admiration for the performances of Charlee Fraser as Mary Jo Bassa (Furiosa’s mother) and Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack (Furiosa’s mentor). The 60-year-old even joked that Burke looks kind of like his famous video game character Solid Snake — the main character of the Metal Gear Solid series. Check out the post below:

Anya and Chris are great, but what is even more blinding this time are these two. These two new characters are too cool! The actors who played them are sure to be a breakout hit.

This is the power of individual artistic appreciation. Despite its box office woes, the film can still impress important figures in the entertainment world. Who knows, maybe word-of-mouth praise from people like Kojima will eventually draw more viewers to Furiosa.
Why Did Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Had a Low Box Office Start?
Hollywood’s hoping for a big summer, but things haven’t started great. According to Forbes, new movies like The Fall Guy and If haven’t done well either. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the latest in the Mad Max series, was expected to be a hit over Memorial Day weekend. However, it seems audiences aren’t as interested as hoped.
There are a few reasons this might be happening. The movie is rated R, which can limit who can see it. Also, it’s been nine years since the last Mad Max movie. Another factor could be the movie itself. Reviews are good, but audience reaction is mixed on Rotten Tomatoes (despite having 91% Audience Score).
