House of the Dragon Season 2 Brutally Skipped One Key Moment Between Jace and Cregan Stark That Makes Game of Thrones’ Biggest Twist Even More Piercing
House of the Dragon is the talk of the town these days, thanks to the release of the second season of the show, which has taken the cinematic universe by storm. It is a prequel to the popular fantasy series Game of Thrones, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
Three years after GOT concluded with its eighth season, fans were presented with the first season of HOTD, set 200 years before the events of the former. The second season of the show, which premiered recently, has a scene between Cregan Stark and Jacaerys Velaryon (Jace), and although the pact they made is not exclusively stated in the show, it will remind viewers of one huge twist in GOT.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Skipped This Part of the Pact Between Cregan Stark and Jacaerys Velaryon
HOTD Season 1 ended with Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett), the son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), flying to Winterfell to meet Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor). The second season, set a few days after the events of the first, started with Jacaerys in the North with Cregan. Although, so far, House Stark did not have a significant role in the story, it is going to play a significant role in the Dance of the Dragons.
According to the novel Fire & Blood, on which the show is based, Cregan Stark is a formidable warrior and a capable leader. However, there is not much information given about him in the series. In the show, it is shown that when Jacaerys seeks the support of the Lord of Winterfell for his mother’s claim to the Iron Throne, the two men reach an agreement, and Stark pledges to send 2000 men to fight on behalf of Princess Rhaenyra.
That said, the full details of the agreement, known as the Pact of Ice and Fire in the book, are not shown in the series. A part of their agreement was that Jacaerys would send his firstborn daughter to Winterfell as a ward until she was of age, to marry Cregan’s son and heir.
The Marriage Alliance in The Pact Will Remind Viewers of This Twist in Game of Thrones
Unfortunately, in the book, Jacaerys dies during the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, and the daughter he promised to Cregan was never born. Even so, the Pact stands as a significant historical attempt to unite the Houses of Ice and Fire.
Decades later, as seen in the book as well as the series, Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi) and Rhaegar Targaryen’s (Wilf Scolding) marriage is revealed and turns out to be a union of love, which was a huge twist because it was widely believed that Rhaegar had kidnapped Lyanna. This false belief was a catalyst in Robert’s Rebellion, also known as the War of the Usurper.
So, it seems as if the Pact was fulfilled even if it was not in the way it was agreed upon. Whatever the way, the alliance between the two Houses was made and widely affected the history of Westeros. The revelation about the marriage between Lyanna and Rhaegar also led to the uncovering of the truth of Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) identity, as he was the couple’s legitimate son, rather than the illegitimate son of Eddard Stark he was thought to be. This also meant that Snow had a rightful claim to the Iron Throne.
House of the Dragon Season 2 episodes are released on Sundays on HBO and Max.
