“How did I get engaged?”: Matthew Perry Was Intoxicated When He Begged to Marry His Ex-girlfriend Molly Hurwitz
Matthew Perry gained notoriety after playing Chandler Bing on FRIENDS from 1994 to 2004 and winning over viewers’ hearts and minds. After his portrayal on the show, Perry earned the moniker of King of Sarcasm, and he continued to wow audiences with his performances in motion pictures.
The actor’s battle with substance abuse dates back to 1997, which he disclosed in his biography Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir. The actor went on to write about the relationship he shared with Molly Hurwitz as well.
Matthew Perry asked Molly Hurwitz to marry him while he was intoxicated
Matthew Perry’s memoir was published last year in which he recounts intimate details of his life that were never spoken about. Perry was apparently intoxicated with 1800 milligrams of hydrocodone when he proposed to Molly Hurwitz in 2019 and wrote (via ET);
“I had even asked for her family’s blessing. Then I’d proposed, high as a kite. And on one knee. And she knew it, too. And she said yes. I bought her a ring because I was desperate that she would leave me. I didn’t want to be this injured and alone during COVID.”
He continued;
“Back in L.A. one more time, trying to sober up, I think, ‘Wait . . . how did I get engaged? There are dogs living in my house. How did this happen?’ I had asked her parents, begged for her hand while high, and put up with the dogs. That’s how scared I was of being abandoned.”
According to a report by US Weekly, Molly Hurwitz had a good influence on the actor who was struggling with addiction issues in the past.
However, Perry and Hurwitz decided to go their separate ways seven months after their engagement. In an interview with People at the time, Perry said,
“Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best. I decided to get engaged. Luckily, I happened to be dating the greatest woman on the face of the planet at this time.”
Perry explained;
“I’m the common denominator. I left first because I thought they were going to annihilate me. I’m going to learn as I go. The next person I really take seriously is somebody that I’m going to be in love with and not be scared by the things that used to scare me.”
He mentioned that he was looking for someone who is self-supporting.
Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54
In devastating news, the actor has unfortunately passed away at the age of 54. The cause of his death is known to be apparent drowning.
TMZ was the first one to report the news and revealed that the actor was found dead in a hot tub at his house in Los Angeles, California. No foul play was involved.
