“How is this a movie”: Jack Black’s ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Seemingly Using a Dark Joke as a Plot Point Creates Mixed Feelings
- The second trailer for Jack Black's A Minecraft Movie has been dropped recently.
- The apparent use of a dark joke in the trailer is drawing mixed reactions.
- The producer and director of the movie were ready for the criticism that the first trailer elicited.
A second trailer of Jack Black’s A Minecraft Movie has hit the internet. While the reactions to this are better than the last one, they are not entirely positive. There could be many reasons why fans are reacting this way to the whole ordeal including the skepticism that was always going to be there because the video game has so many lovers worldwide.
A particularly dark joke related to the game being used in the new trailer of the movie has drawn mixed reactions from people, and it does not look all that good. This is not to say that everyone hates it, but some people have also pointed out that it is actually quite disturbing.
Jack Black’s A Minecraft Movie‘s Second Trailer Has Apparently Used This Joke as a Plot Device
Minecraft has been undoubtedly one of the most beloved video games since the early 2010s. Created by Mojang Studios, it is a sandbox game that has become extremely popular over the years, thanks to the yearly Minecon conventions, merchandise, parodies, and social media marketing.
It took Mojang Studios over a decade to get an adaptation of the game off the ground. It began with plans to make a series, but the idea soon evolved into a film adaptation instead. Now, a live-action film is all set for release next year. Besides Jack Black in the role of Steve, it will also feature actors like Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge.
The second trailer was released by Warner Bros. Pictures and seemingly features a variation of the dark joke, “The children yearn for the mines” which is a catchphrase used for the video game that satirically supports the loosening of child labor laws. The reactions to this have been mixed. Here is what some of them had to say:

A Redditor also expressed their discomfort over the use of this catchphrase in a now-deleted post. That said, how the movie will actually end up performing remains to be seen. In the meantime, the director and producer for the movie have stated that they were unsurprised by the reactions the trailer elicited.
A Minecraft Movie Director and Producer Were Not Very Suprised by the Underwhelming Reaction to the First Trailer
This is not the first time that a video game has been adapted for the big screen. The film adaptation of Super Marios Bros. and the TV show adaptation of The Last of Us are proof enough of the fact that video game adaptations can be successful too.
A Minecraft Movie, on the other hand, has attracted quite a bit of negativity so early on. Luckily, director Jared Hess and producer and Minecraft senior director of original content, Torfi Frans Olafsson are not very surprised by this. Hess recently told IGN:
I mean, look, we knew this game represents so many different things to so many different people. We knew that whatever we led out with, there was going to be strong opinions across the spectrum of what people were expecting, what they wanted it to be. Everybody brings their own special personal connection to the game. So we were ready for everything.
Olaffson also addressed that they had anticipated criticism over the fact that the film is live-action instead of animated. He said that the filmmakers wanted to do something different from what has been done before and there is a lot of animated stuff already out there, so it felt right to go the live-action route for this one.
A Minecraft Movie is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.
