How Much Money Did NFL Star Michael Oher Lose After He Was Denied Royalty in Sandra Bullock’s ‘The Blind Side’?
The subject of the Sandra Bullock starrer, 2009 highly acclaimed The Blind Side, Michael Oher revealed the plot of the movie to be a lie. The NFL star player recently filed a petition against the Tuohy family, revealing to be in conservatorship with them since he was eighteen. The news came as a huge shock for fans around the world. And raised numerous questions. The revelation changes everything known and celebrated about Oher’s relationship with the Tuohys. Amongst the rising curiosities is the prime question of the financial gain the Tuohys have had on Oher’s name, and in turn deprived him of the same.
Michael Oher was Milked for Money by his ‘Family’
Truly based on his life story with his adoptive family, is the film which now the NFL star claims to be false. And that he didn’t make any money off of it, even though the film made huge numbers at the box office.
The Blind Side warmed hearts around the world with its sentimental storyline, emerging as a well-told story of NFL player Michael Oher’s life as a foster kid being adopted by the Tuohy family. The movie made over $300 million at the box office and landed its lead actress, Sandra Bullock an Academy Award. But the story people around the globe loved and believed to be true was in reality a facade to a cruel trick.
The petition Oher filed, stated that he only recently discovered the nature of his conservatorship as it was disguised as an adoption. The world and himself believed it to be an adoption. The petition reads:
“Michael Oher discovered this lie to his chagrin and embarrassment in February of 2023, when he learned that the Conservatorship to which he consented on the basis that doing so would make him a member of the Tuohy family, in fact, provided him no familial relationship with the Tuohys.”
Oher was a senior in high school when he signed the papers and didn’t know what he was getting himself into. The Tuohys did provide him with a stable home environment but minted money in millions over his name, without his knowledge.
Michael Oher didn’t Recieve any Royalties from The Blind Side
The John Lee Hancock-directed film was an adaptation of the Michael Lewis-penned book of the same name. Oher’s petition mentions how the Tuohys were trying to get an adaptation of the book, ever since it was published. The movie was distributed by Warner Bros. and the Tuohys sold their distribution rights. Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy along with their birth children received $225,000 each in exchange. The family also got 2.5% of the film’s net proceeds.
Oher was exempted from the deal, meaning he didn’t have a penny of the film’s revenue. The football player retired from the sport in 2016 and is now focusing to get his rightful share in his movie.
